I had just plugged 1 new HDD and 1 new SSD onto a power lead with an existing SSD on. the new HDD instantly set on fire, followed by a puff of smoke on my SSD. the drive that was there on the same power lead is fine. rest of my system is fine.

is this caused by a faulty power cable?
this is not the first time ive had drives fail and i was careful to make sure everything was correctly plugged in, drives mounted etc.

I am baffled. Please help if you have any idea what this might be. my PSU is a brand new RM1000 from corsair

Agreed that it could be a short, but closely inspect the cables and check that there are no breaks in the wire and plastic insulation. It could also be a faulty header and that it maybe wasn't connecting to the drive port properly.
