2 Price IDing questions

1) When selling unIDed tools is the price offered based on what they
acutally are or what they look like. For example I have a lamp (LAMP 1)
that a shopkeeper will pay me 5 Zorkids for. Can I safely assume that it
is an oil lamp?

2) The spoiler has a section on IDing gems by offering to sell them. It
mentions that it was for 3.3.1. Is it still good?

Yep, in fact this is an important early objective for me. I find, once
I get DSM of some color (usually gray for me), a character's
survivability goes way up, just because of that great, lightweight AC
bonus.

Of course, my previous NAO ascension, and my current game there too
which look like it'll ascend, both had bonesfile minetowns in which the
lamps had been cleaned out. Oh well.

iirc, in vanilla oil lamp and magic lamp have the same price.
And in slash'em, shopkeepers will buy magic lamp at the magic lamp price,
even if not identified.

I dont think so. I think this was considered a bug and fixed in 3.4.* At
least, I've tried that once without succes.

Hypocoristiquement,

What they are, except for gems.

Yes, you can.

Shopkeepers will pay the full price for identified real gems, only a few
$ for unidentified gems whether they are glass or real gems and nothing
at all for identified glass. So no, it probably isn't good anymore.

You remember incorrectly. Magic lamps are much cheaper in vanilla than
in slashem but they are still more expensive than oil lamps.

And when buying, the price for glass is likewise adjusted to match a real
gem of the same colour.

The method still works but the data is out of date. Do a group search for
the following subject line: "Buying and selling unidentified gems" for
an updated table for 3.4.3.

But it's been pointed out several times that there are easier methods
for IDing gems (see The NetHack Object Identification Spoiler).
