2 Router Configuration Help

Need a networking magician to assist me here please

So I'm looking to invest in an Asus RT-N66U router for use in a home network. In a nut shell my devices upstairs are absolutely shocking with Wi-Fi connectivity. I managed to somewhat sort out my Xbox One by doing some port forwarding tricks to make cod and fifa atleast playable however I'm frequently getting booted from servers on BF4/rocket league/arma 3 on my PC due to my ping going through the roof and connectivity is generally bad for the PC.

On the many topics I've read about achieving a 2 router network I'm still somewhat confused on what I can do with it. My devices (PC, Xbox) being wired into the back of a router in my room, my grandads PC is currently wired into the EE Brightbox 2 router downstairs (ISP provided router for those unaware of EE) and the few wireless devices like phones iPad laptop being connected via wireless to the BB2, would this in theory create a subnetwork upstairs that I could take advantage of for gaming and downloading/streaming specifically?

I'm in pretty dire condition here, my PC is using a terrible little dongle for connection and even as I type this on my phone I only have 2 bars signal for WiFi upstairs. DL speed (displayed by router configuration page) is 8.02MB/s. Average speed on steam is about 750kbps, ping can be anywhere between 20 to 300.

You do not want a separate subnet for game..especially with consoles that have nat issues already.

Still your problem is how do you get a ethernet cable up to your room. You want to run the second router as a AP. Even then you want to plug as much as you can into the second router and it more or less is only being used as a dumb switch.

So if you can run ethernet you will get excellent results. Your other options is to buy powerline network devices to act as a ethernet cable. You can then use only a switch if you do not need wireless or plug a AP/router into the powerline. Powerline devices work in most houses but not all so be sure you can return them. I would look at newest av2-1200 models. The costs are only a small amount above the av200 models but the performance is much better.

Unfortunately the wiring in my house wont cater for decent results with the powerline network, its quite an old house so i assume that will be why. Someone over at Linus Tech Forums advised in UniFi AP which i believe to be the best option by running a router in my room to be used to connect my PC, Xbox, Phone and Laptop to the AP which will be located in the hall, so although i cant wire directly from the router in my room to the modem this atleast allows for better WiFi signal and more control over my devices (the plan would be for the downstairs router to function as normal with the downstairs PC still wired into and the various WiFi devices the family use when they come over connecting to that. If you notice anything thats flawed in this please let me know because ive based all of this off a guy over at LTT and some researching into the UniFi AP Lite
