2 Routers 1 Modem?

Would this work? Basically I want 2 separate networks running through one modem. To do this I my first thought was to get a splitter to use one modem port to connect to 2 router ports. But then I did some research and found that I could connect my primary router to the modem and a secondary router to the primary router. Would this create 2 separate networks still or would it still be 1 since the secondary router is still running through the primary router. If the were 2 separate networks and I logged into the primary and stopped connecting to the Internet would I be unable to get to the Internet on the secondary router?

I am pretty new to this so I don't really know what to do, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Unless you have multiple addresses assigned by your ISP, one router (random which router) will get an IP address on the WAN and the other one won't. Your ISP will probably only give your modem 1 public IP address.

If you cascade the two routers LAN on router 1 to WAN on router 2, both of them would be able to get to the internet and devices on router 2 would be able to get to devices on router 1 but router 1 devices would generally be blocked from getting to router 2 devices.

The simplest level of separation would be VLANs on a managed switch. VLANs will segregate traffic.

Are you trying to segregate wired or wireless traffic? If it is wireless traffic then many newer routers have "guest" wireless network capabilities. Devices connected to guest network can only get to other guest devices and the internet.
