Hello everyone, I got myself a problem so I figured it was as good a time as any to get into Tom's.

First off I'm pretty good (compartatively...) with computers but I'm still a bit of a noob. I'm having troubles getting my external mic to work on my computer. The computer has an 2-in-1 audio-in port (1) and my headset (2) has two. I bought an adapter (3) and my headphones are working fine, but the mic is a different story. When I plug the mic in, I get no sound whatsoever. Going through the control panel to the sound section, I've checked all of the levels and everything seems fine, but when the external mic is plugged in the level monitor doesn't even move. I've checked around (for hours...and hours...you know how it is) but I haven't found anyone else with this particular problem. The only thing I can find that seems wrong is the jack information. When I go to sound from the control panel and check the properties of my speakers in the playback tab, the jack information looks something like

L R 0 Analog Jack
L R 0 Right Panel 3.5 mm Jack

While the mic properties says

0 Digital Jack
0 Right Panel 3.5 mm Jack

Hope one of you guys (or gals) can help me out on this one,
Thanks.

Solution
Could be a few things, make sure you have the right connections in the right sides of that adapter, could be a bad adapter, and in some cases, the 4 port plug may be the wrong type, there are two different ones, where the ground is in a different area. You may want to check with the laptop vendor to see if it needs a specific type to work.
