I’m not a complete philostine when it comes to PC’s but I’ve got a lot to learn!

Well my son bought a new graphics card for his pc and discovered that the power pins weren’t the same -

I believe the original ones were 6x 2 see below

the new one looks like an 8 pin

my son who is 12 is looking for me to provide a solution - I haven't got a clue - he wanted to fit it and ram the old connections in - I was like hold your horses!!!

anyone got any ideas an adapter or possibly a new power transformer etc

I’m old so I do apologise for the lack of knowledge but hell it’s an education in itself

any help would be much appreciated- links to pics below

ahh - actually just looking at another thread - there are two red pins in a plastic block & 6 red pins in a 6 block - do these fit together to make 8 and I forget the white 6 pin ?

Here's the secret- The 6pin, and the 8 pin both have the same 3x12V. wires. The extra 2 wires are both GRD.
The 6 pin only uses 2 of the 12V, and 2 GRD. The 3rd GRD on the 6 pin is a signal to the GPU that power is available there.
The 8 pin adds a 3rd GRD, and 2nd signal wire, but uses all3 12V. leads. Just get a 6 to 8 pin adapter, and leave the 2nd 6 pin unused.
You can see the 3x12V. yellow wires in the photo here.

he managed to buy the pc second hand about 12 months ago so not sure who worked on the PCI - didn’t even noticed they had wripped it out

he is currently sick off school and in the pc gaming so will have a look when he is off.

Cheers all

Would also help to know the motherboard model number (and the rest of your system specs). If you're running Windows 10, you can do a Windows Search of System Information and that will tell you the Processor as well as the Baseboard Product Name, Manufacturer, and Version.
