So now that the new GTX 1080 is released I am not sure whether it would be better to wait a little bit for the prices on the 980's to go down and pick up another one of those MSI gaming 4G's or to sell my current 980 and upgrade to a 1080.

Thanks!

I have an sli setup running 2 980s, and i cant say ive really noticed any signifigant issues in modern games. This will vary for you somewhat depending on what you play, but ive been very pleased with my investment. My only regret is that i didnt get the ti, but the 980s were on sale, and that was that.
If you wait a few more months you will probably be able to find a good deal on a second 980, but you need to make sure your psu can handle it. Ive compared my own benchmarks to whats being reported on the 1080s, and my sli setup is pretty consistently 10-15% better at 1440p. Less so vs the aftermarket 1080s, but still better, especially as the resooution goes up.

All that being said I'm still considering going to a single 1080 just...
Single card is always better than dual. Even if the 1080 isn't as fast as SLI'd 980's in most cases, the performance will still be smoother and you won't have to mess around with settings just to get it working perfectly, and not all games support SLI. the 1080 is the better way to go.

GTX 980 SLI completely destroys a single 1080 when going head-to-head. Almost all games, with the exception of Witcher 3, the 980 SLI was faster than the 1080 at both 1440p and 4K. The 1080 outperforms the 980 SLI in Witcher 3 specifically because the 980 SLI does not scale very well with that particular game. Thus, there are some situations where a single 1080 is advantageous to 980 SLI. Nonetheless, there are a lot of games that do scale well with 980 SLI and, in those instances, it smokes the 1080. Would be interesting to see the specs on 1080 SLI....I bet that will be a MONSTER.
