I'm more worried about the 280x crashing :/ Did you install the drivers?

I have a Sapphire r9 280x as well (Dual-X one) I get 60+fps on ultra on most games, so you shouldn't be getting such poor performance

Also I always say go for 1 better card than 2 cards

Crossfire consumes a lot of power and builds up a lot of heat. It also comes with a lot of driver issues. If you have excellent airflow in your case which lives in a nice cool country, crossfire shouldn't be too bad.

I was surprise the 280x is preforming so poorly. tried beta drivers, old drivers, checked the fitting, connection, overclocked it, under clocked it, left it at at stock oc, literally everything.

I get artifacts in every game i play, watchdogs lags on medium settings and most of the time crashes. starcraft 2 won't go above 30 fps in low settings. crysis 3 won;t even run hahaha.

my old hd6950 performed better.

just to add, i'll be using a open loop liquid cooling, so im not worried about heating issues.

thanks for the help

Sounds like either a bottleneck or not enough power geting to the card. What are your full system specs? (Include brand/model of power supply not just wattage)

asus sabertooth 990fx
amd bulldozer fx 8120
16gb corsair vengence
sapphire r9 280x toxic
powercool 1200 watt psu (i already know this is shit, looking to replace)
recon 3d fatality sound card
corsair force gt 64gb ssd
ocz vertex 3 64gb ssd
seagate 1tb 7200 rpm hdd

Is your psu this one to be exact? http://www.pcpower.com/power-supply/turbo-cool-1200.html

Your CPU may be the issue. Look at the performance on Skyrim compared to other CPUs http://gyazo.com/b60d16141a431dfdbaf7c01a5c206ad4

I'm not very familiar with AMDs CPU family, but it might be worth (If it's unlocked) giving your CPU a bit of an overclock to see if the issue persists (Assuming you have a good cpu cooler). Failing that, see if you can go to a friends house with your GPU and test it in their computer (As long as it can handle the 280x lol)

no, the psu is an unbranded POS

As this was my first build i didn't really have the knowledge as far as components go. i bought the bulldozer cpu when it came out, so, there were no reviews yet.

i think i'll keep the GPU and save some money and do a second build....

i'm thinking
MB -maximus vii hero
CPU -intel i7 4790k
my graphics card
PSU - nzxt hale 90 v2 850 watt
keep my ram

what do you think?

I'd say you'd be better off with a good 750 watt psu rather than 850, 750 will be cheaper and will easily power that system. Any of these should do the trick

Also you could spend a lot less on a motherboard with similar results :) Maybe something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-Z97-PC-Mate-Motherboard/dp/B00K8KLW3G/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1403963550&sr=1-3&keywords=z97

Finally make sure you cool the CPU properly (I would recommend not using the stock cooler if you're going to OC). If you want to overclock slightly then a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-Hyper-212-120mm/dp/B0068OI7T8/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1403963614&sr=1-1&keywords=hyper+212+evo) should do the trick, for more powerful overclocking either get a Noctua NH-D14 (air, http://www.amazon.co.uk/NH-D14-Processor-LGA1366-LGA1156-LGA1155/dp/B002VKVZ1A/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1403963640&sr=1-1&keywords=noctua+nh-d14) or Corsair H80i (liquid) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-Series-Digital-Performance-All-In-One/dp/B009ZN03AA/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1403963672&sr=1-1&keywords=corsair+h80i

And finally, if you're just gaming you'd probably be better off saving some cash and getting the i5-4690K, i7 is only really good for Hyper Threading (Video editing/rendering etc) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Core-i5-4690K-BX80646I54690K/dp/B00KPRWB9G/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1403963776&sr=1-3&keywords=i5+4690k

Thanks a lot for the advice.

i'm already cooling the cpu with a closed loop liquid cooling.

i plan to do a custom open loop on my next build.

thanks for the tips, it will save me a lot of money.

cheers.

If you're gaming on 1920 x 1080, A i5-4690K paired with a GTX 770, is the max. Anything more would really be an overkill. This pair will run all games at their highest settings with full AA and Advanced PhysX

He already has a 280x so that should do it :)

update:

I overclocked my cpu from 3.1 ghz to 3.8 and my ram from 1333 to 1866 i have a MASSIVE increase in FPS and all the glitches seem to be gone.

After about 30 minutes of play Google Chrome said it ran out of memory, then Watch dogs crashed and i got a BSOD

I changed my cpu down to 3.4 Ghz and my ram to 1666 and everything seems to by running smoothly for the past hour.

first thought is my PSU can't handle the extra work.

any ideas?

Tell that to Skyrim/Fallout NV with loads of texture mods and an ENB. My system struggles to maintain 60 FPS in both games with my GPU usage maxed out. I would kill for a 780ti to run at 60FPS smooth with even more demanding ENB's.

Sure I could turn off ENB, but after seeing how amazing it makes those games look you'll wonder how you ever played without them.
