$20 media drive for new build, one writes, one doesn't.. Choose which?

I have two options.

A DVD-ROM drive that reads DVDs at 18x and CDs at 48x

or

A DVD Burner that writes all sorts of things, and also reads DVDs at 16x and CDs at 48x.

Both are priced at $20.

Am I missing something, or is that Asus drive an astoundingly better deal?

Don't put a whole lot of thought into it. DVD burners are a "dime a dozen".... Just choose one that matches your case for that $20 price mark.

Well, that's the problem -- one is a DVD Burner, one is just a DVD-ROM. Why are they priced the same? Is it just that $20 is the bare minimum price for the parts and materials, and that both are similarly manufactured?

The manufacturing doesn't cost any different (or is very negligible). Go with the ASUS DVD Burner...
