20 pin vs 24 pin

I just ordered this:

will my old psu work, its an antec 500w with 20 pin and 4 pin connectors?
I've heard the 20 to 24 pin converters dont work well, is this true? I dont want to buy a new psu with a 24 pin coneector. they seem very few and I dont like the choices ive found.

I have an Thermaltake SilentPower 480 watt power supply and an Asus AN8-E SLI motherboard (I'm pretty sure that's the right model!) and I had to use the 24-20 pin adapter you mentioned. I've had ZERO stability/reliability problems with my system despite a 400 MHz overclock (2.2 to 2.6 GHz)

Other than my own personal experience, I can't really comment on any potential problems.
