2000 vs XP

Hi. I am building a new computer for home. It will mainly be used for gaming. I can't decide what OS to load...XP Pro or 2000 Pro. I am concerned about compatibility and of course speed. Any hints/suggestions would be greatly appreciated to help me decide. Thanks.

For gaming... XP.

But... for speed, turn off all the eye candy, zip file and cd burner support as well as all the services you don't need.

That will leave you with essentially win2k... but with the advanced compatibility features of XP.

If gaming is secondary... go with win 2k. It's smaller, faster and more stable... but there isn't a lot of support for DOS games.

Hey, don't laugh... they actually did a good job on this version!


Also cruise through the Display, Taskbar and System properties... lots of good tweaks in there too!

Both win2k and XP are highly configurable...

One thing that really pisses me off about xp is the rendering in 3d s max- for some reason it takes nearly 2x longer in some cases!!

Hilbert space is a big place.

This is purely an opinion, but I feel that 2000 is a lot more stable than XP. I've 2000 and xp on different computers, and generally the 2000 stays on a lot longer than the xp.

But, the xp does about 20x the gaming as the 2000 too. Whatever, I think equally of them both

There was a time when I was doing a lot of downloading. I would leave the computer on for days at a time and just let the Kazaa and WinMX run in the background. My continuous uptime (i.e. time since last shutoff or reboot) actually went over 1000 hours!

Win2k pro is undoubtedly the most stable version of windows.

I just wish they'd work on compatibility with DOS games!

I also feel that Windows 2000 is the most stable version of Windows.

I have Win2K running on the PCs in both my office and home. They hardly crash at all. As for the compatibility issue, there's no need to worry about either. Almost all common software available on the market will work under W2K, unless you're talking about those ancient DOS programs.

2k is far better, ultra-stable.

I don't like the fancy looks of XP (I know you can turn it off, that ain't the point), but MS have come up with "My First Operating System". Yuk.

I don't like the look of XP either. It leaves the impression of something written for --or by-- 12 year olds.

Win2k has been very good to me.

XP is 2000 with more features.

Both are rock stable.

I would go with XP.

I have 2000, and it is rock stable.
when i an behind a XP system, i can't find a thing. I always get the feeling that al the options are gone.
But if you are goung to buy a P4 system with a CPU of 3.06 Ghz (those have HP) you better install XP because it benefints from HP an will make your system faster. You have to disable all the usless things, otherwise you trow away all the extra speed you got from yhe HP.

about the comment that XP=2000+featers ME=98SE+featers, but more featers make things instable, and ME sertenly proves that. and my persenal expirence is that XP also proves that, but that is just an opinion.

2000 PRO has been rock solid for me. Have you noticed Loghorn or whatever M$ new os looks like Netscape 7? Are they building them for 5 year olds?

Sadly, I think they are writing them for the youth market. In a world where Mattel sells Barbie and Hotwheels computers, what do you expect?

XP is a client subset of Win 2K with feature limitations!

Load up W2K with all SP's, IE6, MediaPlayer9, goodie updates and toys.

XP is just a client with Barbie dress!
