200MX to K6-2; Easy Swap???

I have an old PC with an Intel 200MX chip in a socket 7 on a cheap SOYO mobo. Can I just do a swap to a 550MHz AMD K6-2, or do I need to deal with voltages and stuff. I have no documentation for the board (it is a sucky one with no AGP).

the swap will require different voltage, multiplier and fsb settings.
you are going to need the board documentation. Go to the manufacturer's website.

After much searching, I have discovered that the board is a SY 5XA. It is similar to the 5XA rev 1.2 on the SOYO web site, however, an obvious difference is that instead of the 3 DIMM slots on the figure, mine has two 168 pin DIMM slots and some small slot I don't know what it is (where the DIMM 3 is in the figure). There are also two SIMM slots.

Lowest voltage is "Dual 2.2" shown for K6's.
Highest Bus speed is 75
Highest multiplier is 4.5

This is from the 5XA Rev 1.2 manual. The settings described for the P 200 match what my board is at.

Does this limit me to a 300Mhz chip?

The k6-2 has a little known feature where 2x is interpreted as 6x by the processor. Using this feature, your highest speed is 450 (6x75), using the 2x=6x feature and 75MHz. Your voltage is fine-it will even work with the 2.1v processor as long as you use adequate cooling. I would get the k6-2 450, as most of these are 2.2v and can handle up to 2.8v when properly cooled. BTW a Socket 370/462 cooler fits the Socket 7 fine and are available in larger sizes.

Per the SOYO documentation, looks like the best I can do is a 266 K6-2 or a 300 K6. Are they off base on that?
Would these chips make much improvement over a 200MMX (if any)?

Great! There is a setting documented for 2x and 75MHz (for a cyrix P 200). And I think a 450 K6-2 should make a big difference. What wattage should be required from the power supply?

Yeah my cpu fan is pretty puny!

By the way: The case had no fans (just the power, which blows into the case and the cpu). The two hard drives were against each other in the cage and too hot to touch! I separated them and added a blower (bottom front) and exhaust (top back) this afternoon. They are now room temperature.
