Hello, so I've been wanting to get an apple laptop for coding and a bit of doing youtube videos in HD. I already plan on upgrading to SSD and 8gb but I haven't been able to find any youtube videos or a regular post on if that would actually work or make a difference when it comes to editing, so would the 2010/11 MacBook pro be good for editing in HD (less than 20min videos).

Solution
Just finished a render. The original file was in the .mov format. Exported clip in the .mov format. The clip was trimmed from just over 12 minutes to 8 minutes.
Length: 8 minutes.
No special effects, transitions, color correction or adjustments of any kind.

Export settings:
Format: Audio and Video
Resolution: 1080p
Quality: Best (ProRes)
Compress: Better Quality

Render Time: 2 minutes 55 seconds

System Specs:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011)
OS X El Capitan (Version 10.11.5)
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1 GB VRAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000 512MB
Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro and it works well for HD video editing. I upgraded the HDD to an SSD and the RAM to 16 GB (Apple specs state it is only upgradeable to 8 but it will support 16). I don't have a Windows laptop with similar specs to make a comparison. What type of coding are you doing?

Making apps and such just getting a feel of what its like i do plan on going to college for computer science but as of right now all i'm doing is reading a bunch of books to learn basic things. Also how much is your rendering time for lets says a 8 min video?

I will get back to you on that. Currently trying to download the latest beta version of OS X. The amount of time will depend, in part, on the render settings. There are other factors that will affect render time as well. I normally use the two pass option which adds some time to the process.

What editing software do you use?

Haven't got the apple laptop but I'd use iMovie or final cut pro,

That would be awesome thank you

Thank you very much for that, how do you think the i5 would run though?

The i5 should be fine for video editing. Tomorrow I may try to run the render test again but this time exporting for YouTube to see how long it takes.

Update:
Rendered and uploaded a test video to YouTube. This is the same 8 minute clip used in the previous test.
Used the following settings:
Resolution: HD 1080p (1920 x 1080)
Time includes encoding and uploading to YouTube: 25 minutes 7 seconds

1) File
2) Share
3) YouTube
4) Settings

Ah, okay thank you very much. You've been so much help :)
