Ips monitors can be bought separately and still get a lower price if you build a pc with higher specs. The only reason to get a mac is if your job needs it. 27" apple display can be found on amazon for 920, along with other ips monitors on other sites. Which leaves 800-1100 or more which is enough for an i7 build with a 6950/560, rather than a i5 with a low end 6770m. And you could probably still install mac on it.

They're actually a decent deal. All iMacs now feature quad-core CPU. We'll see how well Thunderbolt works its way into the market. New GPU doesn't blow me away, but is an improvement. All LED displays are cool.

iFixIt posted pics of them pulling out the GPU board from the new 21.5" today. I wouldn't call it 'user servicable,' but very much doable to someone comfortable with tinkering around in their new machine.

While I generally like Macs and OS X and recognize that the new iMacs are a significant improvement...I feel like they're just not upgradable enough. If you want an all-in-one maybe they're nice but I'd much rather have a Mac Pro where I can EASILY upgrade the hard drives and graphics card(s). I like the way my Mac Pro looks and its industrial design doesn't detract from my contemporary decor like some other PCs might.

Skittle, I get the sense you disagree, but don't forget that Macs can run Windows (natively or via VM) as well as Linux (natively or via VM). ...so if you don't mind BSD Unix with the OS X GUI on top of it (I'm being a little facetious) then from the OS standpoint Macs are pretty versatile. That's a reason to have one outside of the necessity one's job might present. From the hardware standpoint the iMacs are very neat and clean (what many buy an all-in-one for) and with the latest upgrades they perform very well if not well enough to satisfy the Extreme Gamer. ...but the Extreme Gamer usually isn't looking at Macs anyways.

To those who value form as much as function the iMac has a greater appeal than to those who gladly sacrifice form in favor of the very fastest Crossfire and SLI hardware.

Some have said it takes a less powerful Mac to perform as well as a more powerful Wintel machine. I can't say I agree with that necessarily but if its true the new iMacs should offer even more appeal to the all-in-one crowd. ...and again, given what we've seen from the likes of Sony and HP I think many would choose the iMac as their all-in-one of choice.

It is much faster than the old i mac I read the specs on it.still might have problems with these dots on the screen they say.We will see further what transpires.

Wow, that would be the ultimate disappointment. As it is, Apple ridiculously high prices in their new equipment, and their lack of variety made me go for a PC laptop. After 20 years of faithful devotion to Macs, it all went down to a computer that would be good for browsing the web (flash games), the occasional DVD/CD burning, watching a movie, and very light graphics editing + word processing (which it does quite well)... I wasn't going to spend $800++ for that on a Mac when I can get it for $400.

My thoughts on the iMac, I am certainly not spending $1000+ on a computer that will STILL need some type of upgrade in the next couple of years, and the fact that many Apple products have turned to genuine lemons... who wants to spend $1k plus hundreds more for an extended warranty? I can buy another PC laptop in 2 years without regret if this one shall become obsolete (w/ adequate HDD and memory), and still be saving at least $500 had I bought just one Mac alone.

Since Apple is making big bucks from their iPads and iPhones, they really don't care to sell any of their computers at an economical price for the common user. But that hype will come to an end someday like it always does, and we'll see them selling all-in-one iMacs again for $699 eventually. Until then, I'll be buying PCs.

My 2 cents. Macs are for the rich.

Apple truly isl the "wolf in sheep's clothing" as it were... just as "evil" as any other corporation (and yes, that includes Microsoft). For some reason though, they get a free pass... everyone sees them as positively "angelic". They want to make the most money they can... just like every other corporation. Why people seem to evangelize Apple, I have no idea. They think Mr. Jobs is the second coming.

Trust me... if Apple could have MS's marketshare, they'd do it in a heartbeat. As it is... that's about the only thing that separates the two.
