Reason for upgrade: While I can play most every game I play on max setting with good fps and little lag I have trouble with Minecraft if I turn up the rendering past 12 chunks. I also have very high pop caps with the RTS Empire at War. If I am playing galactic conquest the game will start to lag after a while. Lag also gets bad in skirmishes when both sides have large numbers of ships.

As I understand with the games I play my bottle neck is not my graphics card but cpu? Thus I should upgrade that and the motherboard? So what would be my best options and second, with my budget how much good will an upgrade do me? For example will I be able to max out the render distance on Minecraft and fix the lag issue on EAW or will I just increase performance by a little bit.

You would need a new CPU, motherboard, and ram, at a minimum. A better quality power supply wouldn't be a bad idea either. Also getting it all from Amazon will limit your choices, hurting performance per dollar.

AMD is expected to announce new CPU's, at CES, soon. Given the current rumors, on CPU specs and pricing, I would wait a bit.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the corsair gaming series a step above the cx series (I know the GS series was discontinued.) So would your suggestion really be an upgrade? Also how necessary is a psu upgrade in my situation considering mine has been running solid for 7 years (knock on wood)

As to the other suggestions having done some research (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong) the games that I play that might current system can't handle on max settings are primarily CPU based and don't make use of multiple threads well. Thus cores and primarily speed are more important. That being said would it not be better for me to go with an Intel CPU? Waiting a month or two I can save up a bit more so I was thinkng this.

As to your response I don't mind looking at other merchants and your first suggestion I think would be a minimal upgrade if at all. Am I'm not sure your second suggestion would be a huge upgrade performance wise for the money spent. Could be wrong though.

As you said though If I am going to wait I might do better with one of the new AMDs over the Intel if the rumors are true.

Thanks for the help. What I'll do is purchase the psu now and save up more for Motherboard, cpu, and ram, later.

That being said I can spend a bit more on the psu. So would the RM650X OR TX650 better. The tx650 is actually a good bit cheaper. (I remember hearing the tx was good, or used to be)
