I have a 2016 HP Z640 with the E5-1620 v4. I was given it after my PC blew up. It runs 2011-3 socket which is the same as some 5th and 6th gen i7s. This motherboard however says it only supports Xeon. I have found a few older threads about people successfully plugging a 6900k into it with no issues. I am just looking for some confirmation or if anyone else has done a similar upgrade? THis would be a very cheap upgrade that would improve performance tenfold.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!!

edit: this pc is going to be used for gaming. I have already plugged a hellhound 6650xt into it and a few ssds.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

^ you could look through that document to see the maximum supported CPU for the prebuilt platform.
Thank you!

And I did find that page and it only has Xeons listed. I found a single thread that talked about people successfully slotting an i7 6800k (example, also heard a 5920k worked) but I would like to get at least another confirmation before attempting.

Thanks!

Vanquish,
Hello I also acquired the same tower and same year, totaly unchanged from the factory, I would like to build a good gaming and video editing tower, I wanted to know how your build has gone and also if you could give me any tips, what all have you added or changed out, I see that you installed the hellhound RX 6650 XT , how does it work, I appreciate any feedback. Thank you
