Trying to build a new computer and have decided on a 2070 Super as my video card. I have heard that Ryzen is probably the best way to go, but what CPU do I need? I was originally planning on Ryzen 5 3600x because Bitwit did a build like that, but now I'm leaning Ryzen 7 3700x.

Thanks for the help.

What all do you wish to do with this PC? How long do you expect the CPU to last before needing an upgrade? These are the major factors in deciding between specifically those two CPU's. Since the 3700X has more cores, it will be more suitable if you want to multitask, stream games, do video editing, or some other multi-threaded content creation. The extra cores also means it will stay on top of latest games for a longer time than the 3600X. Even current games can use 8-12 threads, which means some games, in some specific scenarios, can actually max out a Ryzen 3600X. A 3700X would last longer with such games as almost no current game uses more than 12 threads.

I'm mainly building this computer for gaming, but streaming also intrigues me and I could try that. I don't know how long I want the CPU to last, I would hope it could run the new games for at least 5 years. Right now, I just play COD Warzone. I want to make sure the CPU is the right fit, so is there more to this equipment than just that? To me, what you're saying is that the 3600X could run the 2070 Super fine with no bottlenecking, but threads may be in issue.

The GPU is the bottleneck in most games. The R5 3600X doesn't actually get overloaded with pure gaming, because no game uses 12 cores(that's a fat myth, highest thread use is around 8). However if you are also streaming, then that REALLY stresses the R5 out. So buy a R7 3700X.

You are wrong. I know COD MW uses 12 threads, it constantly uses 12 threads out of 16 of my 3700x. I also believe there are several other games that can use more than 8 threads. AoS, RDR2 can and I seem to recall so can BFV.

Edit, Gears 5 can use more than 8 threads

Thank you for this, was going to point this out as well. There are indeed current games that use 12 threads, and it definitely isn't "a fat myth".
