[SOLVED] 20fps with a GTX 1070 on cpu intensive games. (bottleneck)

So I'm running a 1070 and I get like 40-50fps in 4k ultra in battlefield 4.

It's running with an i7 3630qm external gpu so it's extremely bottlenecked in certain games.

Was wondering if theres anything I can do to speed it up a bit? In cpu intensive games I get the same framerate at 4k ultra settings as I do at 800x600 lowest settings.

I know buy a new cpu but I can't afford it right now. Anything I can do to speed it up even a little bit? Anything?

Can anyone help me please?

Specs are:
GTX 1070 sc 8gb
Core i7-3630qm
16gb ram
500gb SSD

I know my CPU is bad, I don't want to hear how I need to buy a new cpu, I get it, I'm working on it. These things are expensive. Anyway I know it should be mega bottlenecking the 1070, so I'm just wondering why the usage is so low?

I don't really understand how to tell what's bottlenecking what. Some games I get 60fps in 4k near ultra settings, and other games I get 20fps no matter the setting or resolution (Jurassic World Evolution). [strike]Although it seems like across the board I can never maintain constant 60 no matter, regardless of setting[/strike](I was wrong, I just had to lower a few settings, duh), even though most of the time in 1440p I can hit the 80s and 90s sometimes.

But MSI afterburner shows like 20% and sometimes less, sometimes it's high but the weird thing is gpu usage is always in the 90s.

Again I don't understand bottlenecks shouldn't the cpu usage be super high and gpu usage low? How do these things work?

Can you tell me how I know by the settings like if X is high then X. Link helpful videos if you want to I just want to understand this.

EDIT: TBH it varies from game to game it isn't always low, it ranges from 20% to 70%, but shouldn't it just be at 99% of something all the time? or at least very high?

The processor is a laptop/notebook processor. I wonder how you're going to get out of that with a better CPU? You should be looking at a desktop. Speaking of desktop, you're running your GPU using an external GPU dock(most often, the Beast EXP GDC GPU dock) which leads me to ask what the make and model of your PSU is and how old the unit is? Are you on the latest BIOS on your laptop? Speaking of laptop, what is the make and model of your unit?

I do all 8 cores have very low usage, screen shot if you want.

I am looking at a desktop, sorry that's what I meant. This is only temporary setup, I'm a poor boy. By "better CPU" I mean building a desktop, thinking of i5 8400, if you know a better intel processor for the price do let me know.

make and model of your PSU is and how old the unit is?
You may have got me there the psu is not very good (I don't think). I got it from a friend for free. It's a 450 watt Antek 450, I could be wrong here, but I think it's this one https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371045
but maybe not. Don't know the age but probably very old. Yes I need a better power supply reccomendations are welcome. I'm on a budget.

Are you on the latest BIOS on your laptop?
No idea to be honest I'm not sure what it is or how to check.

what is the make and model of your unit?
It's a lenovo y500 but please note! Google is reporting the wrong specs, they say gt650m but it's 750m and some sources say 8gb ram but it's not it's 16gb, confirmed in nvidia control panel and windows itself. So I wouldn't trust their sources.

Sorry for not knowing alot. Thanks for trying to help.

Really? Sooo, I know my cpu isn't good enough for the 1070 so how is that possible?

I must also say the tempertures of the cpu are very hot like 85 celsius.

external gpu caddy bandwidth
I know that it's much slower bandwidth and overall equals roughly 25% less performance than a desktop version. You can check my history for that where people explain it to me. But I mean hey, shouldn't this actually HELP my cpu? I'm not trying to run anything over 60fps. I'm fine with the lower bandwidth. I don't need hundreds of fps. I just want consistency and to maintain 60, it usually goes up to like 100fps in 1440p ultra but then will drop to 40fps sometimes and stuff.

Honestly because I'm used to intel and I don't even know what's good with ryzen at all or anything. I prefer intel cause I know more what's good and I've always had them. help is appreciated I guess.

EDIT: the problem was drivers. However now cpu is running too hot.

I'm running egpu.

GTX 1070sc 8gb
Core i7-3630qm
16gb ram
500gb SSD

My problem is in Jurassic World Evolution, but NO OTHER GAMES, my frame rate is atrocious, never going above 20fps.

I get the same framerate in 4k ultra settings as I do in 1024 lowest settings.

I was thinking it has to be my cpu limiting me, but here's the part that makes no sense, all 8 CPU cores are under 20% usage, some sitting at like 3%. Meanwhile GPU is at 99% usage.

My nvidia drivers are 375.63.

This doesn't happen in any other game I've tested. Only this one

Crysis 2 runs high settings 1440p constant 60 I never seen it even drop to 59 once. Battlefield 3 runs everything ultra 1440p 4xmsaa perfect 60fps (I use vsync so don't know what it goes up to, i think 100.)

Anyway this is the only game that does this and it's pisses me off. I refuse to play this at 20fps or less.

Please help me :(

The CPU does indeed bottleneck the GPU but it is not something you should worry about (It bottlenecks it at around about 20%). From what I have seen from other players, the GPU isn't running at 16X or it is a driver's issue.

- the card in the wrong slot
- 6pin power cable not connected to the graphics card
- power adapter to weak
- damaged card/motherboard
- wrong power-saving options in windows (go to control panel and set it to maximum performance in case it isn't)

Hi, Thanks I actually fixed the problem, it was my drivers. I updated drivers and I'm now getting 60fps in 1440p high settings.

But now I have a new problem! My cpu is reaching 100 degrees celsius! It only happens in this game, most other games it is usually at 77C or 85 absolute max.

what can i do to lower temps? It seems like lowering settings makes it worse so what do i do?

There's not much you can do really. 3630qm produces much more heat than other laptops CPUs, and since laptops don't tend to have the best cooling, it is more than usual to have high temperatures. Though 80 degrees is acceptable, what I recommend is purchasing a cheap laptop stand (or fan) to help the air flow, otherwise, you should close any other applications while playing the game (if you have like Google in the background it is more than usual to cause the CPU to run above acceptable levels)

Whats weird is when I feel under the laptop it doesnt feel hot (I don't have any graphics cards inside the computer running. So I thought that would make the cpu cooler.

I really do want to play this game but don't want to ruin my computer. :( anything else I can do? Can I Lower the maximum allowed temperture like I can with gpu?

Is there any way I can upgrade to a better cpu? Can you reccomend compatible ones? I have lenovo y500 16gb ram sli gt750m model

It is not an easy or possible task to upgrade a CPU to a Laptop. (Not most of them at least). I have seen a few videos where they swap the Lenovo Y500 processor but it is a very complicated process, and there are many issues with compatibility. I wouldn't recommend changing the CPU (I would purchase a new Laptop or Desktop if I had the money). I believe the Y500 has Lenovo Nerve Center where you can control the fan speed? (I have used the Y720, and it had that feature). If you can, I would recommend turning the fan speed to maximum.

Sorry to clarify are you using a stand alone external GPU unit ? how is it connected?
How much ram are you using ?
The CPU only has a maximum speed of 3.4ghz which isnt considerably great in 2019.
if im correct in saying you have the GPU connected to a laptop then the USB would cirtainly be the problem.
Does your laptop have USB 3.0 ? and if so have you installed the drivers to utilise this ?

I wanted to update you first, apparently I'm NOT cpu bottlenecked, all 8 cores show under 20% usage and the highest i've ever seen was 80% on one core but that's rare, usually it's around 20%. So what gives?

Tempertures can range from okay at around 75 celsius to absolutely unnacceptable at 102.

temps seem to be much higher on the newest driver (417) vs my old one (368)

Anyway I'm using
gdc beast unit with lower bandwidth, should theoretically mean there is less load on the cpu then, i think.

It SEEMS to be better since I updated drivers but I'm concerned about the temps. Yeah I know my cpu isnt considered great, thats a given. I'm just unable to afford building an entire desktop right now but I plan to.

Oh and it's not usb, it's connected onto the motherboard in the pcie slot.

Also 16gb of ram

I downloaded lenovo nerve center but theres no option for fan speed? I think online they said I need to update bios but I don't know how and i googled it and couldnt find one for my laptop.
