A few months ago, I turned on my Gateway Vivitron 21 CRT made in March 1994, and there was no image. There was, however, a humming noise. Some of you may be already saying, that thing is ancient, scrap it. I actually rather use it that the 19" LCD I'm currently using. After opening the monitor, I discovered that the buzzing noise was coming from under a plastic cover mid way ontop of the tube.
Does anyone have the faintest idea of what it may be? I could take a picture of it sometime this week if anyone thinks they can help. I would prefer not to take this to a repair shop because it will most likely cost alot and the thing weighs about 70 lbs. It may have something to do with the fact that there was a fan in the window a foot away from the monitor, but it worked fine while the fan was running. The next morning, it just stopped working. Also, the little green on light is blinking, and when I turn the monitor on, I hear the power-up with a constant audible buzzing noise which I never heard of before in the monitor but there is no image.

I've got the exact same monitor, and the exact same problem!

The screen worked fine last night, then this morning it just started humming... I can't even get the OSD to come up.

Did you ever find a solution? Or did you end up scrapping your screen?

Nope, I tried looking for a solution on the internet, didn't find anything. My OSD doesn't come up either, but the wierd thing is, when I start it up, it makes the normal power up noise. I'm guessing that there may be a problem supplying enough power to the tube when it starts up, or the transformer is screwed up. I never worked on a monitor, so I really don't know if those are the real causes.
I actually still have the monitor, I just stuck it in the corner of the room. It's been there ever since it broke, it's just collecting dust now. I hope I can find a solution or have it repaired cheaply. If I can't find a cheap repair becuase it needs a new part which costs a lot, I'll throw it out. I would rather save up the money for a plasma screen. 😀
