22in or 24in LCD? - that is the question

So I've narrowed down my choices for my new LCD to the DELL SP2208WFP or the DELL E248WFP Widescreen Flat Panel Monitors. They both fall into an acceptable price range for me. The question is which should I choose. Should I take the 22in and get more features and extras, or should I get the 24in and get a higher resolution?

I was hoping you all could help me decide by sharing your opinions and reasoning.

If you want to watch Blu-Ray or HD DVD then get the 24" LCD 'cause the resolution of these movies is 1920 x 1080.

The 24" LCD will also need a more powerful video card to play games at full resolution compared to a 22" LCD. Most people would probably recommend at least a GeForce 8800GTS 320MB, or the ATI equivalent (Radeon 2900XT or HD3850 ???) for lots of eye candy on a 22" LCD.

hmm, so a 8800GTS 512mb will rip a 1650x10 res game to shreds (escept crysis ofcourse 😀 ) ?

im thinking of upgrading from a 19" CRT to a 22" WS LCD too =)

Jaguarskx - the 22in is advertised as being capable of viewing HD video as well. So does the 24in allow you to view full 1080p HD video, while the 22in lets you view lesser quality HD video, perhaps at say 720p?

Also, my video card is a X1900XTX, which according to my research can hold its own playing games at the resolutions supported by the 22in and 24in. However, I plan on upgrading my card in the near future, so the X1900XTX will be sufficient enough for now.

Yeah, I think an 8800GTS 512MB should be quite good at tearing games to shreds at 1680x1050 resolution. Enjoy!

There are two HD video standards the "old" standard is 720p or 1280 x 720. All 22" LCD monitors will be capable of displaying these videos.

The "newer" HD standard is 1080; or 1920 x 1080. Most people think of this when people talk about HD video. The 22" Dell is not capable of displaying this resolution since it's maximum resolution is only 1680 x 1050. Therefore, the resolution will be shrunk down to fit on the screen.

As for the video card... The card that is best suited for you will depend on what types of games and how much eye candy you want. A hardcore gamer would probably want a 8800GTS 320MB (or faster) for first person shooter (FPS) games. I mostly play strategy games that usually don't require too much power so I can get away with play at 1920 x 1200 with my Radeon X1900XT 512MB. The most recent FPS game I played was Half-Life 2 and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.

Once again, thank you very much jaguarskx for your informative post. I've decided to go with the 24in Dell. With the format war winding down, I'd like to have a LCD monitor capable of viewing full 1080p content. Plus, gaming at the higher resolution should be fun, as well as doing normal application work with all the extra window space will be very helpful.

When it comes to gaming, I play both FPS and RTS games. Right now Call of Duty 4 and Team Fortress 2 are getting the most attention due to how much I enjoy playing their multiplayer. However, from time to time I like to sit down and replay the single player campaigns for games I've already beaten, like Command and Conquer 3, Bioshock, Gears of War, Crysis, etc. My X1900XTX plays all those games with max DX9 settings, except for Crysis of course. So I'm confident in its ability to handle the new monitor. In the near feature, I plan on upgrading my card to a 3870, which should only improve the experience.

I have just purchased a hyundai 24" and its awsome, 24" is definetly the way to go, I use a 22 at work, and its so small in comparison now.
But I wanted to mention the new overheads of that resolution for your gaming. I play a lot of company of heroes and its now dog slow at 1920x1080. now I'm looking at some serious upgrading.
I run a 6600 o/c'd to 3ghz, and a 8800gts 640mb. and I have to upgrade, or turn down details to low levels.

Hmm I wanna grab a nice big 24", I feel as though I'm not unleashing the full power of my 8800GT... I was just afraid a year from now I couldnt play new games full bore at such a high res. But, if it seconds as a movie monitor that would be great too. So much money though..which is a BIG problem with school/taxes all that good stuff.

Hehe, I hear ya bildo123. I've actually put my plans to buy a new monitor on hold for now, due to lack of money. 🙁
However, I have decided on a monitor. I'm going to go with the Dell 2408WFP. The resolution on the 24" will be awesome for gaming and will allow me to watch 1080p HD movies. That should keep me busy for a while.
