I have an older computer (Built 2008) with an evga 8800 gts GPU that was sometimes leaving images from pull-down menus but no problems in game. When my 3 yr old Seagate HD started going bad, I decided it would be a good time to RMA the GPU as well. 2 weeks later I get both pieces back but the HD is 6.0 and refurbished and the GPU is GTX 750 Ti. (MoBo Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L, Intel Q6700, etc.)
I contacted evga via email and they said it would be incompatible and to contact tech support about how to replace it. I contacted tech support by phone and they said the card wouldn't be a problem in my current system.
I went ahead and installed the OS and 8 years of updates, which took from Friday evening until Sat evening. When a lightening storm moved into the area, I turned off my computer (which I usually keep on 95% of the time) just as a precaution. As an aside, it is plugged into an APC backup battery w/surge. Please note that lightening did NOT strike. I just turn off the computer now and then when the storm looks particularly electric just in case.
When I turned the computer on the next morning, it went through the BIOS screen and then to the black screen saying it couldn't find the OS and the option to insert OS Disc, Safe Mode, etc. I chose the "Last Known Good Configuration" option. It started to work and then it just faded off. I rechecked all the power cables, turned it back on and, it started then faded off. I then went inside the PC to check that those cables were all tight and again, it started then faded off. Then it didn't start at all. I switched around outlets - nothing.
I had an old PSU so I swapped it out and it still wouldn't power up, regardless the outlet. I bought a new MoBo battery. Nothing. I bought a new PSU, just in case the older PSU was bad and still no power, regardless the outlet.
Prior to returning the GPU and HD, I hadn't had any issues with my PC. It kept time/date and, other than the small issue with the GPU, games played fine, etc. When the HD began having issues - I spent two weeks getting off as much stuff as I could before it finally was kaput - I wasn't too concerned as it was a 3 year old (new)Seagate that had replaced a bad 4 year old Seagate. I've read they tend to have a lifespan of 1-3 years so I didn't see that as being unusual.
In light of not having any issues prior to replacing old parts with incompatible new parts, it seems likely to me that the GPU might be the root of the problem and has rendered my MoBo useless. While I need to talk with evga again (just got new PSU today so was waiting to see if it was the cause), it would be helpful if I could go into the conversation with an idea of what might have happened as evga will likely want to take themselves out of the equation. Additionally, if there IS any way the HD could fry the MoBo, that would also be helpful.
