Question from kervykots : "24GB Ram Quad Channel?"
kervykots :
Hey, I've got Corsair LPX 16GB (8x2) (2400mhz) and my spare Team T-Force 8GB (4x2) (3000mhz). Would these sticks work on my ASrock Z370 Taichi as Quad Channel?
Your help will be much appreciated,
Kots
madmatt30 :
Z370 boards are dual channel, not quad channel.
There is a chance that putting one 8gb stuck & one 4gb stick in each channel will run dual channel,ok.
The faster ram will downclock to 2400mhz though even in a best case scenario.
So it won't work at all? 2 8gb and 2 4gb?
No thats not what I said at all.
It wont run quad channel because there is no quad channel on a z series board.
You can run 4 sticks but it will still run dual channel at best.
Channels need to have a matched amount of ram so you need 12gb in each channel - one 8gb stick+1 4gb stick in each channel.
Mixing & matching ram (especially of different speeds & brands) has absolutely no guarantee of working though & may require manual tinkering in bios - the best case scenario is you will have 24gb dual channel ram running at 2400mhz.
The worst case scenario is it simply wont post & youll have to remove the 2x 4gb sticks again.
I would never recommend someone buying mismatched sticks but if you already own them then there is no harm in actually trying - you're not going to damage anything permanantly .
I will add though that unless you actually need more then 16gb ram for heavy duty productivity then there will be zero benefit to having more than 16gb ram in your system.
