24gb setup for GA-X58A-UD3R

hi guys

looking for some advice and direction on what ram to use in an upgrade. currently have 6x2gb and I want to double that to 3x 8GB or 6x 4GB (preferably triple channel).

here is my mb GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 1.0)

Hi and welcome to Toms forum, I hope that you get an answer to your question.

I will say that in my previous build I had the i7-980X CPU and thought it was a great CPU that lasted me for quite some time. I used an Asus Rampage MB and had 24gb of ram installed. The ram worked flawless from the time I installed it until I retired the Pc for a new one.
The ram I used was the same that you listed in option 5, the Corsair Dominator 1600mhz.I believe that the i7-980 was made for 1600mhz ram and you should have no trouble if you choose that ram. I used 6 sticks of 4gb each and when you install it you will see that it will default to 1333mhz and all you have to do is enable the XMP Profile and it will set the ram to 1600mhz.

thanks for your experience. Assuming they both work, do you know if the 3x8gb GSkill will outperform the corsairs (with fans). Was thinking that the Gskills could allow me to go up to 48gb down the track on my next computer.

Corsair and G.SKill are the two top brands and are very close performance wise. The top models of each brand are very good quality and performance so you really can't go wrong with either one. To go to 48gb of ram you must really have some memory intensive programs that require a huge amount of ram.

I assume my rendering times for after effects would go down significantly?

Lots of ram and an i7 CPU are what makes for a good rendering machine. If you have a quad core with hyper threading for 8 virtual cores then you should have a minimum of 16gb of ram installed and 24gb will allow you 3gb per core. At 48gb of ram it will be even better and if your budget allows by going with a X79 chipset and the LGA 2011 socket you can go with up to 64gb and the i7 Sandy/Ivy Bridge-E. But that may be getting carried away although it's nice to imagine what could be.
