$255 R9 290x or $330 GTX 970

Solution
The 290x will run at much, much higher temps than the 970, thus is louder and will cause your other fans to run at higher speeds and result in a noticably higher system noise/temp. If silence doesn't matter, and you can get a 290x at $255, go for it. However 290x in xfire is a very poor option in comparison to gtx 970 in SLI due to its high temps, so don't plan on going down that road in the future. Plain and simple, the GTX 970 is a BETTER card in almost all aspects.

The 970 is out performing the 290x as of now. It is all up to you if you want to spend the little extra for the performance boost. The difference isn't ridiculous but definitely noticeable between the two. Also, AMD gives you a few free games when you buy their high end cards. NVIDIA might give you 1. Take that into consideration too.
