So I am looking to replace my current 27" 1920 by 1080 monitor with a 27" 2560 by 1440. Along with that I am sure it will be time to upgrade my GPU.
APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Next few months
Budget:$100 to $500 (Although I would rather keep it below $350)
USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming (I rarely play FPS games so it is not like I need to have 60FPS in BF3), Office stuff, surfing
CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: GPU: Currenctly runnning a GTX 460 1GB (256Bit core:825, Shader:1650, Memory:4100) PSU: Termaltake Smart Series 750W Modular (SP-750M)
OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS:
CPU: FX - 8320 (@4.1GHz)
MB: GA-990FXA-UD3
Case: Zalman Z9 Plus Mid Tower (using 4 120MM fans)
RAM: 16GB DDR3- (CL9 @1866MHz)
PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: Newegg or Micro Center (I live near a Micro Center)
PARTS PREFERENCES: Prefer AMD but willing to go Nvidia
OVERCLOCKING: Maybe (depending on heat considerations) SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Yes that is part of my question
MONITOR RESOLUTION: 2560 X 1440
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I don't need to be playing every game on Ultra but on the same note I am not looking to get a QHD monitor to play on medium. I am looking for a good value as well as I know if I spend more it will be better but If I can spend $300 on good enough I prefer that over $500 on great.
I look at it as having a few options beyond waiting for the next generation (which is also an option).
Option 1: Buy a used GTX 460 that matches my current card. This is the cheapest option but I think the 1GB of VRAM and microstuttering may leave me wanting a better upgrade
Option 2: buy a single "higher" end card (GTX 660Ti , GTX670, Radeon 7950, or 7970)
Option 3: Get 2 cards and crossfire / SLI (like 7870GhZ or GTX660)
I am personally leaning towards the 7950 which would also leave me open to a future crossfire option. Wondering everyone's opinions;
