2560 x 1440 available but distirted

I have 27 NEC reference monitor but cannot get 2560 x 1440to display properly. Graphics cards able to display and it shows up in available resolution list but when selected a distorted desktop appears!!! :-( Help....

are you using a dvi cable? if so, it's most likely not a "dual link dvi" cable, which is necessary for that resolution.
