2560 x 1440 available but distorted

I have 27 NEC reference monitor but cannot get 2560 x 1440to display properly. Graphics cards able to display and it shows up in available resolution list but when selected a distorted desktop appears!!! :-( Help....

best to list exact model and what gpu you have. also, that you are indeed using a dvi connector rather than an hdmi or any other connector

I am connecting to monitor by DVi and the GPU is Nvidia GeForce 770X
Monitor is NEC reference 272W model
Let me know if you need more. My operating system is Windows 7

reference in no way tells me what model the monitor is. for all you know, the monitor may not actually support 1440 resolution...

also, when switching resolutions you may have to other things such as make sure the aspect ratio set on the monitor is correct (may have to physically change this on the monitor using the buttons)
