Hey there, hope you're all doing well.

I'd like to ask for your opinion on upgrading my display. I'm currently running a 24.5" 1080p 144hz G-Sync compatible display from HP, and I have a smaller 22" 1080p 60hz on the side.

I wanted to ask for your opinion on upgrading the main display. I'm looking to upgrade to an ultrawide monitor 32"/34" 2560x1080p 144Hz or 3440x1440p 100Hz, and now I am wondering if that is a good idea? Is there a major difference between the two? I do not do any kind of artistic workloads. After upgrading, I plan to keep both of my old displays, which would ultimately lead me to 3 displays.

I've got a Ryzen 7 3700x + 2080 + 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz CL16 running in a Corsair 4000D airflow.

Best regards!

Personally I have used 1080p on a few 27” monitors and I don’t like the low pixel density. Therefore I personally would not buy a 32/34” 2560x1080 for the same reason.

However 3440x1440 is a lot of pixels for gaming. I upgraded my 2080S to a 3080 for 2560x1440 as I found the 2080S a little underwhelming, there were other reasons such as wanting HDMI 2.1. 3440x1440 on a 2080 is going to depend on the games you play and in gpu heavy games how comfortable you are dropping settings to medium.

Only you can say if it's a good idea. Will you use 3 displays?
I had 2 displays (32" and a 27") and added another 32" (Ultragear 1440@165hz) as the new main. While I really like the Ultragear and plan on keeping it, I find that I don't use the 3rd display as often as I thought I would. Triple screen gaming wore off on me rather quickly but i'm not much of a gamer these days anyways, so most of the time it sits there with just a website or chat program on it and I don't look at it much.

The new display will be the one I'll be gaming on, and the other 2 are going to be there for my work along with the main one. I am mostly concerned about the performance if I go with the 3440x1440. It will also lack 44Hz.

Related to the games, I play. I've got no issue with turning the settings down for the smooth performance, as I mostly play FPS shooters and I'm playing on the "visibility" settings. Since I'm living in a country where everything tech-related has a 50% markup and limited availability even without the current situation, I don't see myself upgrading my GPU in the near future and that also worries me with 3440x1440 display.

I see no problem with buying monitor with specs higher then your current GPU can handle. Good quality monitor can last 10 years which is way longer then gaming GPU can, so you are sure to catch up with GPU specs at one point. The only real question you have to answer for yourself is how much sacrifice for you is only 100Hz.

I've changed the settings and IMO, I can notice the difference, or it's just my mind playing games with me. If I manage to find any good deals on Black Friday, I'll surely try to pick up a 144Hz 2K UW.

Here are my two cents:

I had 29 inch Ultrawide monitor with 2560x1080 resolution and 60hz. Later I upgraded my monitor with 27 inch 1440p monitor with 2560x1440 resolution and 75hz. I have GTX 1070.

In games I definitely started struggling to maintain stable fps and it's especially hard if I want 75 fps instead of 60, but in a lot of games even on medium settings I still can't get stable 60 fps on that resolution. As a monitor they both are bigger than just a standard 24 inch monitors, just my 29 inch ultrawide monitor had slightly shorter height, but wider length compensated it and it didn't look small. By the way I still can't tell difference between 60 and 75hz.

I never had 144hz monitor so I can't comment on that, but personally if I had two choose between 144hz and small screen or 60hz and bigger screen and resolution, I would definitely go with the second choice. I think bigger screen is a better upgrade - bigger picture, more space... However if you're hardcore gamer and especially playing competitive online games and don't care about more space and size, then I guess higher hz monitor will be beneficial for you.

Now, about 2560x1080 vs 3440x1440. Definitely there will be big difference with 3440x1440p having a more space, but again remember - you will need beast GPU in order to play modern games smoothly on that resolution and right now gaming GPUs have nauseating prices due to mining. If it was me choosing between those two monitors, I would still choose 3440x1440 monitor simply because it has more space, more pixels, which means bigger and nicer picture and also because I'm not playing video games too much lately, just sometimes casually.

When I saw 3440x1440 monitor (don't remember size probably 34 inch) in real life, it didn't seem as big as I thought comparing to my old 29 inch 2560x1440p, however once I visited some constructing company and I saw their architect's monitor and I was instantly blown away by the size and look. It was a massive, huge monitor. It completely impressed me. I've never seen such a huge, badass monitor. I will never forget it. Later I google that model and seems like it was Dell UltraSharp 49 Curved Monitor - U4919DW. It's resolution is 5120 x 1440 at 60Hz. If you don't care about gaming, I would get this massive beast without a hesitation.
