Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a new graphics card, used primarily for gaming. Just a couple of questions bout it though

1)Firstly, is there a big difference between a 128 MB card and a 256 MB card?

2)If the 256MB card is better, do you suggest the GeForce FX 5600 EP/XT/LE 256Mb or the Radeon 9600 Pro 256Mb?

Thanks for your help

1. Not in cards the cards you suggested
2. In 128 mb versions, the 9600 pro

1.) The 128MB cards are often faster, using higher speed memory
2.) The 9600 Pro.

Wasn't contradicting you in any way bro, just linking the comparison between the two cards he mentioned and happened to link it to your post rather than his. Please note you have helped me out so much I wouldn't purposely do anything to undermine you. :>)

P.s. my step dad was an english major and it is your.:>)

So just to clarify if there is a choice between a 128MB 9600 Pro and a 256MB 9600 Pro, you would suggest going for the 128MB 9600 pro?

Thanks again for your help

Yes! The STANDARD version of the 9600 Pro 128MB comes with 300MHz (DDR600) RAM. The CHEAP versions of the 9600 Pro come with 200MHz (DDR400) RAM.

Those cheap versions include such cards as: Most 256MB 9600 Pro's, the 9600 Pro EZ, etc. Lots of companies try to sell the cheap cards as standard.

In the case of the 256MB version, they use cheap RAM so they can sell the cards at a similar price to the 128MB standard version, making you believe you're getting a better deal. It's a marketing gimick that hurts YOUR performance.

Yeh, I've only gotten around 5,000 post in graphics cards methinks, I'll have to step up the pace maybe.

What is your current post count Crash, just out of curiosity?

To keep post related to topic: Go with the 128mb version. As of right now, there really isn't much gain anyway in going with 256mb. It's kinda like the difference between AGP 4x and 8x. Not a whole lot.

I don't keep track, but people tell me I got this title at 30k...

It's not just that more video RAM (more than 128MB) isn't very usefull, but there's also the fact that 256MB cards are often using DRASTICALLY SLOWER RAM than the 128MB version.

So, what do you think about the Radeon 9600 XT 256MB? It got a core speed of 500 MHZ and memory speed of 375x2?

Thanks

That's a horse of a different color! But you still have to be carefull because there are a few companies NOT following that standard and suppling inferior RAM and sub-par speeds, even on the XT. So make sure you know what you're buying!
