So, I've noticed for a while that my 2600k Sandy Bridge i7 has been idling between 40-50c a lot. I use the stock heatsink and today it stopped working. I noticed in Speccy my CPU temp was at ~85c. I immediately shut down upon noticing this -- surprisingly, my PC did not shut down automatically.
I have an ASUS P8H77-V LE motherboard. After trying to turn the PC back on, it went into the bios and gave the normal first beep, but then the bios screen disappeared and it gave me one long beep followed by four short beeps. I tried unplugging the heatsink from the MoBo, and it still gave me the 5 beeps. The manual for the motherboard is garbage; it doesn't give beep codes at all, and I haven't been able to find what this beep sequence means on the internet, either.
When I turn my PC on, it still gives me the normal one beep in the beginning. There is a 10-15 second delay before it gives me the 5 beeps. So, I know the heatsink is broken, because it stopped spinning. I did find out online that 5 SHORT beeps on this MoBo indicates a problem with the CPU, but it could mean a number of different things, including both heatsink failure and CPU failure. However, as I mentioned, I am pretty certain it was 1 long beep followed by 4 short beeps, which I have found no information on at all.
My question is this: is the CPU fried as well?
