I got a DDR4-2666MHz for my build because it was at the same price as the 2400MHz.
but now I read this https://ark.intel.com/products/97144/Intel-Core-i5-7600K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-4_20-GHz
Memory Types: DDR4-2133/2400, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V.
Now I'm confused... does this mean that I can't go with the 2666MHz? does it mean that I can but the speed wont go past 2400MHz? I'm just confused...
Also, I've read this https://ark.intel.com/products/126685/Intel-Core-i5-8600K-Processor-9M-Cache-up-to-4_30-GHz
Memory Types: DDR4-2666.
Does it mean the new CPU will only go at 2666MHz?

Solution
No there will not be any issues. The officially supported memory speed for your 7600K is 2400Mhz, but it will handle well over that so long as you have a motherboard that supports memory overclocking such as a certified Z-series chipset. Most motherboards default to 2133MHz, so you would still want to go in to BIOS to enable XMP so it will run at full speed.

There's some good info in this thread related to your questions. There's a post from an Official G.Skill Representative towards the end. http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2786469/intel-6700k-cpu-support-2133mhz.html

I have a cheap one but it is a Z-series: MSI Z170A PC MATE
What would happen if it wasn't a Z-series? I know that it could not overclock , but does that mean that even with a 2666MHz RAM it would only go at 2400MHz. Is it problematic? should I go for the 2400Mhz even though it is exactly the same price, or should i stay with the 2666MHz?
Can 2400MHz be used for the new i5-8600K?

If it wasn't a Z series mobo the RAM wouldn't go past 2133MHz on 100 series mobo, 2400Mhz on 200 series mobo, or 2666 on 300 series mobo. Those are the standard rated speeds for those chipsets, anything more would be considered overclocked which is why it requires a Z-series mobo.

Just keep your 2666Mhz, it will work with an i5-8600K even without a Z-series mobo because the 8600K requires a 300 series chipset mobo which has a 2666Mhz standard.

*Z-series mobos are for overclocking memory as well as CPUs.

Alright, but how does it work by the way. If my put my RAM 2666MHz on my 7600K will it only run 2400MHz? does it cause issues? do I have to go on my BIOS to overclock to 2666MHz? Will it be fine if I just stick the 2666MHz and play?

btw i read you need a new motherboard, a z370 for the new 8000 series, is this true?
weird that its no supporting z170/270 right?
