Question 2666mhz RAM running on 2400mhz with Intel i3 8100

My motherboard would support 2666mhz but does Intel too? I'm confused about this one, XMP is enabled but the max is 2400mhz, if i try to manually change it to 2666mhz my pc won't boot. So 2400mhz is the max with this cpu?
