280x or 290?

Hi all, im doing some upgrades and need help. I found an r9 290 for 490 NZD which is a good deal but im worried as it is only a reference design. Ive had some bad luck with cards in the past. I dont wana waste my money so i wana do this right. I could pick up a saphire r9 280x vapor x and put the money to my other upgrades (i5 4440, itx mobo and prodigy) or i could get the 290 and keep my fx 6300. I think the 290 would choke in my case and id almost rather the 280x coz it has a custom cooler. What do you guys think? im tight on cash atm and dont wanna mess this up and lose all my money on a card that will die quick.

I don't like either card to be paired with fx 6300. You have bottlenecks for sure and you are better off upgrading to i5 and getting one these graphic cards later.
