Well ATI is about to drop their next-gen cards and it looks like Nvidia has their hands full......

BTW : Dual 4890's in x-fire will obliterate a single GTX 285 (2GB) and they are priced more or less the same....

Yea but a 4870x2 is a sketchy card..... I'd rather have a new GTX 285 (2GB) then a 4870x2..... less heat, more space = less issues......

For the price of that 285 you might as well save up a tad more and get a 295..... or better yet Tri-Fire 4870's....

The 4870x2 isn't at all sketchy. I haven't had any problems at all with either of mine.

Guess you are one of the lucks ones.... I built 2 rigs, both with 4870x2's and the heat was just unaceptable... One of the cards was reaching 85c with the fan @ 80% and the other one died within 5 months (due to heat issues as well)...... Both GPU's were replaced, one with a 295 and the other with a 4890 and to this date I have not seen 1 issue so far....

Btw : one was an XFX and the other a Sapphire... both cards were sent back for full refunds...

They didn't just figure it out, they still trailed ATi (and XGI which was bought by ATi), but they did figure it out quite some time ago, seems like someone forgot about the Gigabyte 3D1 and the Asus equivalent ....

Anywhooooo, still think that THAT DH review was surprisingly poor considering their usual better quality, considering no price equivalent, and no 1GB version comparison to show the value of it, and also really, c'mon if you still can't play Warhead @ Enthuiast level (Gamer isn't the top) then really how impressive is that compared to an SLi or CF solution that can? Why not even a 2GB HD4870 for at least the GTA segment for some type of balance, perhaps because then it might not look so impressive when a 4870 gets almost the same results as the 285 and the 4890 beats it;

And amazing what even just a 50mhz core boost will do to those performance numbers in Crysis, from their previous review, pushing the min up by 4 fps making it a little more respectable and not so big a difference;

Just seems sloppy and even purposeful (get the review out in a hurry before any other card steals any possible thunder it could have to n00bz ) not to include all the other options that they obviously had for previous reviews, and also to not test conditions worthy of such a card, which even both comparing it at all if you're going to hamstring the whole process?

There's only one game there that makes it appear that there's a difference, and that would be GTA, and even in their previous review it's not enough of a difference to change much of anything except distant objects and only slightly.

Not very compelling for anyone who already owns a GTX280, HD48xx regardless of 1GB or 2.

Certainly wouldn't bother buying one at this late in the game. Funny the Sparkle cards they chose got deactivated by NewEgg, and they chose is as the cheapest one on the Egg;

not quite.... dual 250's has 264 SP's while the 295 has 480 SP's.......

Dual 275's in Sli would be more or less the same as a 295........

Yeah I dont remember that card, dual 6600GT. It must have had something wrong with it for them to go back to dual pcb's.

Nothing wrong with it, they even made dual GF6800s, but for the GF7800 the wiring requirements, especially for the memory, made it difficult to put it on a single board without making it a big board, like the GF7800 version of Asus one I mentioned;

As you can see it did well and got an editor's choice award, however the reality of the situation, it was too big and too expensive, just like the GF7800Gx2; and the GF7900Gx2 is what started making the idea more acceptable to the revivalists of the dual GPU solution where it was smaller than it's predecessor, not requiring a major redesign of many high end rigs, and with nV subsidised pricing to compete against the X1900/1950 it was a little more 'reasonable'.

Anywhooo, the 3D1 cards were fine, they just weren't very economical or practical compared to just SLI'ing a pair of cheap GF6800 GTs, and without Quad SLi or even the option for the 3D1, there just wasn't much interest in them, and then the ASUS cards were just so dang BIG!

and its sli as well which improves gaming by a tad bit.
