I'm using an asus m2n-e motherboard, and 2 kingston 2gb ram cards that came with the computer and were working before. Now that I added another 2 CEON 1GB cards, the system detects all cards, no matter how they are ordered and in what combination, as 2GB. Even without the new cards and just using the old kingston cards they are still detected as 1GB cards. Both the bios and ubuntu show the same amount of memory. I tried running memtest and got no errors. I also tried resetting the BIOS to default (with the jumpers) and still the same results. Any idea how this happened and how I can revert the problem?

the 2gb card should come out as around 1.40gigs to 1.86gigs and if this isn't the problem then i am no help

Not sure where you are getting those figures from. This isn't like hard drives and the GiB vs GB marketing issues...
If you haven't tried moving the Kingston sticks to another pair of slots, give that a try.
Your board doesn't support 6GB of memory at all, so that is why that didn't go well. As to why the Kingston sticks no longer self identify as 2GB sticks, I would try a BIOS reset. The memory may be stuck in a mode that identifies them as 1GB so that when you had all 4 sticks in the computer it booted.
You mention Ubuntu. Is that the 32bit or 64 bit installation?

First of all, yes, I did try moving the cards around. I even checked every card in all 4 slots and got 1024mb of memory in all cases. Secondly, are you sure the board doesn't support 6GB? By what i've seen it supports up to 8, does it only support powers of 2? (Sorry if this is a stupid question, i'm new to computer customization). And third, the ubuntu installation is 64 bit.
I tried resetting the BIOS and it didn't help, still getting the same results as before.

QVL Qualified Vendor List shows no configurations above 4GB.
Hmm, kind of surprised on the BIOS reset. The memory should be reporting its size appropriately. If it used to work I can't imagine what is wrong now. If you aren't on the latest BIOS, might give that a try.
Unless having all the memory in there damaged the controller, trying to source too much current, in which case I would suspect it would have stopped working completely.
Might hit up Tradesman1 with a PM, he is the resident memory guru.

Ok, thanks. I was trying to avoid bios update cause I heard that can brick the computer. Well I guess i'll try it and get back to you.
EDIT: I updated to the latest non-beta version, no difference. The new version changelogs dont say anything about ram, just support for more cpus.
