i have a dell optiplex gx 260 with 2 gigs of ram what is the most i cant put in and it still work

Your, gpu can't have ram added to it, if you talking aboug whole pc, you can typically upgrade to 32 gb.

According to Mr Dell your optiplex gx 260 can have a maximum of 2GB, so it looks like you are at the maximum already, might be time for a new pc
