Approximate Purchase Date: Within 3 weeks

Budget Range: $2k-3k (preferably 2k) before shipping/etc

System Usage from Most to Least Important: VR gaming, online FPS gaming, 3D animation

Are you buying a monitor: No

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: What do you recommend?

Location: Missouri, USA

Parts Preferences: Nvidia, Intel

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe

Your Monitor Resolution:1920x1080

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Never had a PC that wasn't a potato, have a little cash and want to treat myself.

Additional Comments: Will be making not-ultrarealistic 3D models & animations with Blender/Cycles. First time using VR, total budget is a hard $3k but that includes headset (will be getting Valve Index $999 kit), OS, and other non-PC component costs.

I know nothing about the current market. I only know Intel Core i9 = better than i7. I heard somewhere that a Nvidia 3090 was in some ways no better than a 1080TI. I "want" the best of the best if I can fit it in my budget, but looking at the price tag of a 3090 has me wondering if I'll actually notice any performance decrease with a 2070 or something, or some AMD alternative. I don't "need" 4k 100+ FPS, I just want to be able to play games like VRChat, Onward, Super Hot VR, Hitman VR, Beatsaber, etc. smoothly with decent quality settings and no lag/framerate drops.

I'll be making more styled animations rather than going for ultra realism (think Sintel vs. Unreal Engine realistic forest simulations). More concerned with any sort of lag during production than final render times, I doubt that will be much of an issue with modern GPUs. Are double graphics cards still a thing? Would that be worth looking into, possibly for a future upgrade?

This build is meant for gaming at 1080P. And btw the i9 is a hose job.

No, it isn't. Unless you have a need for the production time savings capable from a i9 12900k, it's basically matched by the 12700k in gaming, even the 12600k/12400 isn't far behind.

Depends on context. For gaming on a 1080p monitor, there's no real tangible difference between the 2, both will be above the refresh of the monitor, maxing out cpu ability, so you won't see any real difference in fps on screen. At 4k, there's a vast difference in ability, what a 3090 can do at ultra settings you'll be at low/medium at best and still falling behind with a 1080ti.

1080ti/2080/3070 all pretty much the same, give or take a couple of fps. 3070 and 3090 aren't on the same level.

3080/ti and 12700k will be more than good enough for your purposes, won't break the bank nor cost a ton extra just for the last 5% in performance you'll not see except in a benchmark. But thats general, you could just as easily run a 3060ti (1080/2070Super) 12400, and not be all that far behind depending on the software requirements . At a fraction of the cost.

Some insight about Blender...

This should be well balanced for your purpose...

Thank you all for your suggestions! & Thank you @Karadjgne for your explanations! Maybe I should've put the Valve Index's resolution, which is 1440x1600 per eye 2880x1600 combined. I plan on having this PC for a long time and will eventually upgrade the monitor as well, possibly to 4k or at least 1440.

I really like @Hellfire13 's build. I swapped some parts for things that were cheaper and as far as I could tell still had everything I wanted: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/r6pdH2
I managed to fit in a 3080 and still keep it under 2k. It's a LHR card, though, which as far as I can tell isn't supposed to affect anything if you're not mining. Has anyone ever had any problems with that?

Is there any particular reason to use the Asus PRIME? I changed the motherboard to the Gigabyte Gaming X AX since it's cheaper and appears to still have everything I need. There's a Micro ATX Gigabyte board that seems similar and is even cheaper. I can't fathom why I would want another PCIe card, but if I did it still has another slot. Will the CPU cooler and the GPU fit in it? If so is there a reason not to get it instead and save a little cash?

Changed the SSD to a smaller one for (as far as I can tell) similar speed. I'll be buying a couple HDD's in the future for more storage, so I don't need a whole lot of space on it.
Is there any particular reason to use the Corsair 4000D instead of the DIYPC Silence? It's cheaper and has more USB ports in the front, which I like, and still has enough clearance for the GPU & the CPU cooler.

Apparently the CPU cooler will need a separate adapter and it sounds like people have had difficulties getting them. If that's still a problem, is there another one that's just as good that will fit a lga12700 natively? I've searched around and that info seems hard to find.

The Gaming X is also a decent board. Note that the B chipset has limited PCIe lanes and no OC feature, not that you need it. Looking back it seems that I selected the Prime in place of the Tuf Gaming Plus by mistake. I originally intended to select the Tuf Gaming Plus for its better quality VRM, since this is a gaming rig and the 12700k is a 125w chip which can run hot during those intense gaming sessions. The Prime and the Gaming X are in the same category in terms of VRM, so you wont be loosing much there.
Some resources for you to recheck the above point...

The smaller volume is fine but a SSD with DRAM cache will be more beneficial overall and that WD drive doesn't have DRAM cache...

:A DRAM cache can be important in more ways than just holding a map of the data. An SSD moves the data around quite a bit in an effort to extend its lifespan. This technique is called “Wear Leveling” and is employed in an effort to prevent some of the memory cells from wearing out too quickly. "

Is there any particular reason to use the Corsair 4000D instead of the DIYPC Silence? It's cheaper and has more USB ports in the front, which I like, and still has enough clearance for the GPU & the CPU cooler.
The 4000d is large enough for the Cooler clearance and is pretty good for Airflow which is necessary for a gaming PC...
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYsOmJ9X7Ow

Not sure about cooler clearance on that Silence case and not too sure about the Airflow either. Do recheck these factors before purchasing that case. A gaming rig can get hot and without adequate airflow it might throttle.

Apparently the CPU cooler will need a separate adapter and it sounds like people have had difficulties getting them. If that's still a problem, is there another one that's just as good that will fit a lga12700 natively? I've searched around and that info seems hard to find.
Deepcool has made available mounting kit for that Cooler...

You can speak to their customer support for availability near you.
Other alternatives would be Noctua NH-D15, Dark Rock Pro 4, Cooler Master MasterAir MA624 Stealth, etc...

Every motherboard has the basics. Cpu socket, ram sockets, i/o backplate, VRM's, sata/pcie controllers etc. All of that can be crammed into a 6"x6" square pcb, mITX, but ATX is 9"x12", that opens up 'possibilities' mITX has no room for. MITX might have at best 3x fan headers ATX can often have 6 plus pump, aux cpu etc. That's also the difference between mATX and ATX. There's not just room for more stuff, there's room to relocate it.

You can generally put a mITX mobo into an ATX case, but it won't have all the available headers you want, they'll be crammed into one small spot in the worst place for clean wiring, the VRM's and cooling are generally smaller, less m.2 slots (usually those are on the rear or mITX/mATX) etc etc.

So while mATX is often cheaper than ATX, even for the exact same name board, it's also less desirable for most because it just makes things difficult.

Couple years ago, optical was a must have. Storage was small. No m.2. So everything revolved around Sata connections. 2x optical for burning, 2x hdd for storage, 2x ssd for scratch disk and OS. ATX had 6-8 Sata, mATX had 4 Sata. Difficult.

So take what you need into mobo selection consideration, mATX is often good enough, and cheaper always sounds good, but if it doesn't have what you need, it's worthless.

Personally this is how I would do it. In reality its just a downcosted build similar to hellfire's with a better SSD;

I've spent the past few days trying to find a better case & SSD. I can't find another case under $100 that has the proper CPU cooler clearance and good reviews in regards to airflow. So unless anyone knows of something better under $100 (preferably without glass) I'm sticking with the 4000D.

The WD Black SN850 appears to be even faster than the M470 and also has DRAM. Some people say it gets hot but it also sounds like the M470 does, and if it becomes an issue I can buy a heatsink for it.

So this is what I'll be buying, does it sound good? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/G862xs

Here's a board with better VRM's and audio codec than that Gigabyte board in your link. btw pretty much all motherboards these days come with an M.2 SSD heatsink.

MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 $159.99

Less heat, less power and a better match for a B660 board.

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/u...2700f-processor-25m-cache-up-to-4-90-ghz.html

For a few dollars more you can upgrade to a 1TB SSD and yes this one has cache.

PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe Gen3 x4 Internal SSD $109.99

This is a beast. Not in size but definitely in Performance. This is a decent up in games but is a huge jump for 3D Animation and other workload. Specifically depending on complexity of scene and number of layers and textures being applied this gonna make a very huge difference specially thanks to its additional VRAM. Which gonna load and hold huge scenes and complex files on it without needing to go to and forth saving a lot of time(loooooot of time) to get the process done.

Yes. Read that. I provided the list as an option as there were already two lists covering the range of $2K which are decently put up. But if he wanted to weigh in Productive work(which I know was last on his usage list). Just gave him an option to if he wanted to check that route.

I have already seen the builds you guys put together for below $2K budget range and they are very good and nothing much to change or add.

I was just making sure nothing was read over and missed. With an extra 1k he definitely could benefit from a 3090 either way. In my opinion the 12900 isn't worth the cost over a 12700. Are you sure that the Arctic 280 clc can fit in that case? It is longer than normal clc's and is also 38mm in width.

Yes that will fit in the front. Fans facing out not in. Cannot be mounted the other-way round. Same is the issue with many other larger cases for top mount.

That is an odd but effective design.

Cool. Thanks for dropping in a pointer anyways. It is always welcome.

I appreciate the look into a 3K rig @King Dranzer, but while I definitely like it, my bank account does not. :coldsweat:

Thanks @Why_Me for the additional part recommendations! I'll be going with that mobo. With the SSD, I'll be buying quite a few 1-2TB HDDs for video/etc storage/backup in the future so spending more now for a bigger SSD isn't really necessary. I think the SN850 is a good middle ground between speed & price, though the SN750SE is significantly cheaper, but also slower. Though I'm not sure how much that would translate into real-world noticeableness, but the SN850 is still well within my budget anyways.

In regards to the 12700F, I was originally sticking with the K because it sounded like the F performed slightly lower in benchmarks, which is odd. Would this have any real-world impact?
It also sounds like Alder Lake doesn't support 3600MHz RAM without XMP, and it seems XMP causes a lot of instability issues, and I'd rather not mess with it. Is there a good 3200MHz RAM I can go with instead? Would that significantly impact performance, maybe would it be worth it to just get the 3600 and see if XMP works (would that have any risk of bricking the PC?), and if not would the 3600MHz run just fine at 3200MHz without XMP?

The difference between the 12700K / 12700KF and the 12700 / 12700F is paltry one fps. Now consider how much juice and how much heat the unlocked cpu produces vs the locked cpu. The 12700 / 12700F matched with a B660 board is a no brainer imo. There's a reason the Z690 boards have a superior VRM design vs the B660 boards ... those boards were meant for unlocked cpu's.

If you want to further save a few coins, consider going with the 3080 12gig edition. I saw that Newegg has it listed for about 849-899 right now and Toms had a recent article where this card is an overclocked edition of the standard 3080 10gig version and often beats out the 3080ti in gaming benchmarks. Its a great deal for the money and will allow you to put more money in your pocket or in another area to better benefit your build.

Also, I know you may want to jump both feet into vr but you may want to consider holding off on that headset you listed as a buddy of mine told me that unreal engine 5 is out and will totally revamp the vr experience. I would suggest if you want to hold off for the newer units to come out that take advantage of that, look online for used vr sets and get yourself a cheaper oculus set for around 200-250 that's been barely used and enjoy that set for now and keep your money in the fun jar until the newer much better sets come out in the next year or so. I only mention this as it would disappoint me to invest 1k in a vr set then miss out on the newer stuff around the corner. Just my .02 cents...

I would get the 12700 with iGPU instead of the 12700F without the iGPU. The iGPU is pretty useful in the absence of a second GPU, to diagnose display issues in case your main GPU is not working. With current GPU prices its a handy feature to have anyways. Also, incase you ever need, it also comes along with a pretty handy encoding feature called Quicksync...

With a locked CPU you wont need a tower cooler as it will not get anywhere near as hot as the 12700k. Also Intel does not gain much with tighter memory timings, so you can save a few bucks there. I found a cheaper SSD with DRAM cache as well. Here is the new list...

Nice build ^^ other than I'd size up to an 850w psu and I'd spend a few more dollars on the cpu cooler and go with one of these instead.

I did consider the Deepcool unit, but with a locked CPU it wont be required. The Deepcool is a Tier 3 unit pretty close to the D15 and meant more for unlocked CPUs. The Freezer is pretty capable of keeping that 12700 cool...

The Scythe Fuma 2 Rev B hangs in there with the DeepCool cooler. The downside of the original Fuma 2 was the fan speed topped out at 1250 RPM. This revised Fuma 2 (Rev B) tops out at 1500 RPM which has made a world of difference.

I'll switch to the Corsair Rmx 850 2021: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/26...-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-cp-9020200-na

I don't know much about CPU coolers, but for only $13 more I'm going to go with the Scythe Fuma 2 rev. B just because it's natively 12700 compatible so I won't have all my parts but be waiting for weeks because they're short on mounting brackets.

Other than that, I'm having a hard time finding the XD80 anywhere for that price so I just switched it to a WD SN750. Also the Ventus 3x Plus keeps going out of stock so unless it's back in for $819.99 by the time I buy everything tomorrow morning, I switched to the Gaming Z Trio.

So final part list which I'll be buying tonight/tomorrow unless we have any objections here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/k9pYd9

Thank you all for all your help! It's very appreciated.
