2nd gen i3 cpu work with 3rd gen motherboard?

Solution

sorry bud. you will not be able to use that windows on your new PC. you could use that Hard drive, but you will need to format (wipe) it and install a new windows over it. Windows 7 Home Premium Sp1 OEM runs around 80-100 bucks. If money is an issue, you can install Linux (Ubuntu, LinuxMint, Fedora etc). And you have options there too. IF you want you can install Linux ALONGSIDE windows 7, or you can install linux OVER windows 7. side by side means you choose which OS to boot into when you turn the PC on (when you have 2 operating systems installed, it will detect that and ask you to choose between the 2). If you need to you can use linux in the new, and swap the Hard drive back into the old, if need...

scroll down to "CPU type" it says next to it core i3/1155, so yes compatibility is good (if you are worried make absolutley certain your CPU is in fact as described). No you wont have to re install windows unless your product key is OEM (did windows come preinstalled when you bought it?) as OEM Windows Licenses are tied to the motherboard they are installed on. New motherboard would mean new product key is needed. If you have a regular windows key (that can be reused) or if you have a harddrive with non OEM windows already on it, you should be able to boot into it just fine. The things you will need to consider is if its 32x or 64x or 86x windows and if that type will be compatible with your ram and other components. Why dont you post your full set up/plans

Well im trying to change my computer its currently a dell
Intel i3 2100 3.1Ghz
Amd Radeon HD 6670
Coolermaster 550 watt
1TB Hard Drive
4 GB Ram
Dell Motherboard....... I know this is Stupid...

okay lets check to be sure, but im almost sure you have an OEM liscence. Click start / right click "computer"/ properties. now scroll to the bottom where your product key info is, read it and if OEM is somewhere in the key ive got bad news for you...

Replacing the mobo is going to gain very little if any performance increase. Frys has a BF special at 9am 11/29 made up of a i53570k + MSI Z77a-g41 for $205-20 mir. By replacing the cpu mobo and getting a better gpu you'll get way better performance.

If it fits in your budget, the easiest route and most sensible is to buy a new copy of windows 7 for THAT computer. (it too will be OEM)

How can he keep his OEM liscence? I suppose you could simply buy a new disc and only use the key. The place i had u check to see what kind of liscense should also have th option to change your product key. Idk if this the best route. I prefer to backup important files and do clean installation for a new build.

right it might work, and it will just be an unactivated, non geniune install of windows. it might bug you every now again about that, idk if MS acutally does anything about it..
