Hi, I have a decent build with a 3070, 5600x on an asus prime x570 pro. For boot drive, have an 1TB inland for os and such and has worked fine, gen pcie 3.0. It's full, so I'm looking to add a 2nd m.2 to the 2nd m.2 slot on the board. This will work of chipset and use some of the lanes. As far as I know it will not affect anything with the 1st m.2 using the 16 lanes. I have called asus to try to figure out exactly what's compatible. I guess any nvme m.2 with work, not said about sata. This willl be for game storage. I know the 2nd m.2 is signifigantly slower working off chipset. I have looked at all reviews between 3.0 and 4.0 and it generally seems not worth it to gain .5 to 1 second. All connections are gen 4 pcie. Didn't bother worth 4.0 on main drive. Wondering if because 2nd m.2 drive is already slowed down from being on chipset, and gen 4 pcie might actually make a difference. Prices are getting pretty close gen 4 vs 3. like 20-30 dollars maybe at most compared to ss 970 evo plus. Course Asus recomended using 4.0, were vague about wha m.2nvme is compatiablie. but not sure if it will actually give faster speeds on 2nd m.2 slot which has heat sink. Will gen 4 help already slow speed of chipset 2nd m.2? going to go 2 TB. Any recomendations would be great. 2nd m.2 info is not great in user manual or anywhere. When i do crucial checker, they always assume i'm using main m.2 cpu slot. Thanks.

Solution
top m.2 controlled by CPU so its lanes are not affected by adding 2nd

I don't know the real world benefits of PCIe 4 over 3 NVME, I know they faster in tests but really, the difference between 3500 and 5000 isn't that big in real time.

if prices are so close might as well get a PCIe 4 one.
I would be amazed if a Samsung NVME didn't work with it.
shame Asus don't have a list of compatible NVME on mb site

They dowgraded oarts on samsung. I happend to find an older evo plus with phoenix controller. The real cheap n
gen 4 are having some issues. they're built real cheap and starting to show. mostly a thin ps5 or laptop unit xpg s70 blade.

i have additional question if you ever used 2nd slot on asus x570pro:
i just got an 970 evo plus 2tb to idtall in 2nd m.2 aloy on boyyom with hratsimk. I cant fin bag with m.2 srews. its a 2280 that has some kind of stadoff. dooes this come mounted under heat sink or do i need to get one. What size? I also will need m.2 screw, not sure if all the same size, if so what size. I honestly looked on web and cany find conclusive answer. one last thing. I supplied heat sink aququate or should i leave off and get heat sink yaylored for card? thanks

Screws and mount for second M.2 slot are already there, now holding it's heats ink. That heat sink is enough as 970 evo plus doesn't get hot. Under similar heat sink, mine doesn't go over 40c even under benchmark.

An asus support rep just told me that since I'm using and external gpu, that my 2nd m.2 will only get gen 4x1. I can't find out if this is accurate
