I didn't got any reply on first time so I try again......

Hello to all,

I yust replaced my Asus FX5200-128 for a Palit FX5700-256 VE and installed
Riva tuner because I read someting on
the internet that this Palit should overclock verry nice....

RivaTuner says: 128bit NV36 [A1] 256 DDR

And at the overclocking tab for 3D i get the next ranges:

core 125 225 ~ 315 375
mem 200 360 ~ 500 600

I took the core to 300 (for a start) and the test still pass

I took the mem to 420 and it failed, I have to lower it to approx 418 to
get it pass.

Now here I get a bit confused.
The card specs are 400Mhz for mem (2*200)
So how do I have to read the 418 I set??
Is that 418 (2*209) with only a increase of 9!! Mhz ( where is my X-treme
overclocking??)
or 418*2= 836?? that should be F.U. to me....

The mem chips are Infineon HYB25D25616 1CE -5.0
and I found: DDR1 200mhz on the internet.

Do I have to flash my bios first??
Who can give me some "inside information" on this...

TIA

Dump RivaTuner and search for "CoolBits" (try
http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/39-p1.php). After installation, and perhaps a
reboot, select "Display Properties/Settings/Advanced" and then your card.
There should be "Clock Frequency Settings" in the pop box on the left side
of the properties window. Select and then click "Manual overclocking" and
adjust. Depending on your driver version, you may have to scroll through a
disclaimer box and click "I accept". Try a few MHz at a time and test.
Trial a few games and if it works then you can check the "Apply these
changes at startup" box.

Easy

Thanks Dave,

I started with Coolbits but got some trouble with "detonator"
versions/compatibility and something else, so I dumped CoolBits and
started Riva and it worked without problems in one pass.

What is the advantage with CoolBits compared with Riva??

Other things I should now about getting more out of my FX5700VE?? besides
Core/mem speed??

TIA

Don't know of any specific advantage. It is interesting to note that the
author of Coolbits, named Rewt at nvnews.net forums, uses Rivatuner to
overclock and recommends this to others. The following registry key will
turn on the nvidia overclocking page only and leave everything else alone.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak]
"Coolbits"=dword:2

I guess I should say that I thought that using Coolbits was easier than
using RivaTuner. RivaTuner just confused the #@$@ out of me. Using
Coolbits simply enables several additional settings and information pages
in the Nvidia display properties pages. The nvidia pages were much easier
to understand. Also Rivatuner will have to run at boot time to set the
overclocking and other settings you choose. I believe that Nvcpl runs at
boot time to set the Nvidia/Coolbits setting as well so this factor is
probably the same for Coolbits and for RivaTuner. I also believe that both
RivaTuner and Nvcpl terminate once the card/driver has been initialized
with your settings.

You shouldn't have to flash your BIOS to get your card to overclock.
Flashing the BIOS is serious stuff so don't try it until you have
seriously educated yourself about it. You can permnently trash your card
in the process of flashing the BIOS. This doesn't mean that there aren't
benefits to flashing, but you shouldn't have to, just to overclock your
card. Keep in mind that overclocking is somewhat of a 'luck of the draw'
sort of thing. You may be getting all your gonna get even though some
flavors of 5700 are supposed to overclock alot. Your flavor of 5700, and
your specific card, may not overclock very well at all.

You may want to update to the latest nvidia drivers before installing
Coolbits. Get the newest Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia website. There may
be beta drivers or others available but I don't know where to get them or
what might be available. The safe bet is to get nvidia's drivers. Nvidia
also has a recommended driver update procedure somewhere on there web
page. Find it and use it. Some people also use Driver Cleaner to remove
stale driver entries from there registry.

Also, get Coolbits3D. Coolbits3d is the latest version of Coolbits. I
tried looking for a location but couldn't find one so I submitted a post
at nvnews.net asking for a location. I'll repost when I get a reply.

Coolbits has been superceded by NVTweak. Get NVTweak from:
