OK, here goes: I have two Xbox 360's hard wired to the network. I can port forward to one Xbox but not both. I understand that I instead need to port TRIGGER but I can's seem to negotiate that within the setup. How do I go about this? I have a 3801hgv gateway.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Forgot to mention this is ATT Uverse 2Wire. Here is what the setup looks like..

Unfortunately, 2Wire routers do not support Port Triggering. What is it you are trying to do with your xbox 360's?

If you are just trying to connect to the internet, just plug them both into the router at the same time. You should have no issues. If you are trying to create a LAN between the two, again you should have no issues by just using a router. If you want to bypass the router however, you can always use a crossover cable and just plug each xbox directly into one another, creating a small network just between the two xbox's.

Port triggering is a configuration option on a NAT-enabled router that allows a host machine to dynamically and automatically forward a specific port back to itself. Port triggering opens an incoming port when your computer is using a specified outgoing port for specific traffic.

Thanks SolianHelix. It doesn't surprise me that the 2Wire isn't capable of that function. It's pretty crappy.

To answer your question about what I'm trying to do; I can only use port forwarding for one of the two XBox's. Consequently one has an open NAT and the other is strict which is bad when you're trying to hookup with other players via XBox live. So I figured port triggering is the way to go.

Could I do this by hooking up a new router to the 2Wire in bridge mode?

According to softpedia, you can change your xbox's NAT type to Open by port forwarding and using a DMZ. I personally do not think that the DMZ is necessary, as all you should need is port forwarding but it is just a matter of preference. This link may help you: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Guide-to-Opening-NAT-Xbox-360-71775.shtml

As for your new router idea, it would be acceptable as 2wire routers do not normally come with a QoS engine so installing a new router would improve your gaming experience. If you decide to purchase a new router, you WILL need to put your 2wire modem into DMZ or 'Bridge' mode.

Sounds like you want to remove any Moderate or Strict nat issues you have which won't be solved by port forwarding due to multiple xbox's on the same router. You need port triggering. Most modern routers support port triggering nowadays.
