Hi Guys, i seen this topic around here a few times but most people asking for gaming machines.
Im about to buy a new PC and need to know if i should go for 2x16GB or 4x8GB ram chips

the Chips are Corsair 32GB DDR 2400Mhz Vengeance

my mother board is the Z170M-D3h, can support 64GB of ram, so if i wanted to upgrade it would better to go for 2x16gb chips but doubt ill go that high

I do 3d renders and animation and just need to know if i should i go for the2x16 chips or the 4x8gb chips

You want whatever combination of DIMMs allows you to occupy all slots so you can benefit from both instances of dual channel support your motherboard has. This is why RAM is made/sold in pairs or sets so that they both work with and can be used together. For dual-channel, you only need to install memory in pairs. All four memory sticks don't have to be identical, only the pairs do. They must be installed in their proper usually color coded memory slots.

You can never have too much RAM and in this context I mean having more than your system needs won't have any detrimental effects on its performance. With the sort of work you do, you'll want all the RAM you can get your hands on. It'll be a nice safety net for both it and your software environment in general.

So I'd go for the 4x8 since 32 GB should easily be more than enough to last you into your next new system years down the line. Perhaps then when say DDR5 is a thing you can consider going 64 GB.

Oh and just a heads up. You've typed 4x4 in your topic title, but 4x8 in your opening post so the title choice is between 32 and 16 while the body is between two variations of 32 one of which can be expanded as only half the slots will be used while the other cannot. I'd change the title so they match to avoid confusion.

Hi Xeiros

Thanks for the heads up! I can either buy 2 x 16 gb or 4 x 8gb ( 32 in total )
I read some techno talk about the differences between the amount of chips you have and which is better in the long run. Does it make a difference in performance in work flow?
