Question 2x16gb stick or 2x8gb + 1x16gb

I just got a craigslist PC and it has a single Samsung 2RX8 PC4-2133P 16gb stick. Its ECC RAM.

I was wondering if it would be better for me to just get a single matching stick off ebay or buy a new set of matching 2x8gb set and make the system a 3 stick set up, The new RAM would be much faster but the old RAM, but would the slower RAM just slow everything down?.

Would the ECC RAM even play well with the normal RAM off Amazon?


I have a i7 6700 on a Asus z170 pro

1. You can't mix and match ECC and non ECC. You use whatever the motherboard takes. The specs specifically state non-ECC.
2. Mixing RAM of any type is a crapshoot.
3. How much RAM do you actually need? What is this system used for?
