Solution
When it comes to total memory, no you should have a total of 8Gb now. Where you should have a problem is that if you have three sticks in different memory slots it forces all the memory to work in single channel rather than in dual channel. In other words, it will get a bit slower unless you find another stick to line up with the 4GB stick.

tl;dr

More but slower RAM

You may as well give it a shot if you ordered it already.

I'm going to assume your motherboard has 4 RAM slots, one thing to consider is to fill up that fourth slot. I would think using 3 out of 4 RAM slots will render any dual channel whatever inactive...?

Also, as for what o1die said. Check out the RAM configurations to be safe.
Example

Slot1: 2GB
Slot2: 4GB
Slot3: 2GB
Slot4: (possible 4GB)

is better than:

Slot1: 2GB
Slot2: 2GB
Slot3: 4GB
Slot4: (possible 4GB)

I could be completely wrong though... just a thought.
