Question 2x4gb+1x8gb or 2x8gb

Hi, I have a MOBO ASUS M5A97 R2.0 with 4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3. Currently using 2x4gb of memory and planning to upgrade to 16gb. Do i add an 8gb along with the existing 2x4gb or go for 2x8gb?
(please be kind with the answers, not so tech savvy )

You should put 2x 8gb because ram you either put two or four sticks of ram. Three ram modules can cause performance and compatibility issues. So go with 2x 8gb ram, it also leaves you two slots for future upgrading. Cheers!

Follow up question, can I put in 2x8gb along with the existing 2x4gb? (don't want to waste the existing ones)

Actually you can try that, if all are the same model and speed it will work. Enjoy!

Not true. It might work but it may not. RAM is only guaranteed in the kits it is sold, even mixing to kits of the same model can have issues.
