2x4gb dual channel vs 4x2gb memory

I am upgrading my memory to 8GB. I do a lot of gaming, but the upgrade is more for Photoshop and other graphics rendering programs. Is it better to run 2 x 4GB sticks in a dual channel setup, or spread it out over all 4 slots in a 4 x 2GB setup?

I built the system 5 years ago so it is a little outdated.
MB: ECS nVidia 680i SLI
CPU: QC6700 Quad Core 2 Extreme LGA 775
Max Memory: 8GB DDR2 800MHz (currently running 2GB Corsair XMS dual channel)
GPU: 8800GTS (upgrading soon as well)

It is slightly better to use two modules than to use four because it puts less strain on the memory controller. That also leaves room for more RAM if you upgrade the RAM again before you get a new machine.

Thanks for the advice. Ended up going with two modules (more expensive, but not enough to break the bank). Unfortunately my motherboard is old enough that 8GB is the max memory. So next RAM upgrade comes in the form of a new rig when this one dies.
