Question 2x8Gb vs 4x4Gb Gaming Comparison (Intel)

This video seems to show a moderate gain in some games with 4x4gb running in dual channel on a 9700k. I was not expecting any material difference and was clearly wrong. Just wondered what others made of this?

Hi All

A while back I found a review showing 4x4Gb can have noticeable fps improvements with a 9700k and posted a thread for discussion https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/2x8gb-vs-4x4gb-gaming-comparison-intel.3479216/

The same reviewer has done the same test with a Ryzen 3600X and sees similar improvements

I thought this might be useful to share and discuss.

Look at the cpu. The 2x8Gb is running at 4.5GHz. The 4x4Gb is running at 4.9GHz. Wonder why there's an average 10fps difference....

Also 4Gb modules tend to run tighter timings than 8Gb modules, most average ddr4 2666 2x8 runs Cas16, the 4x4 runs Cas15. That's not that big a difference though since workload on the memory controller can change things too.

Either way, that's not really a general case scenario, most games with Intel it's not so important. There's just stuff missing, like what Cas, what ram speeds etc. 2x8Gb 2666 C16 vs 4x4Gb 3200 C16 etc. Could be that with the cpu at 4.9GHz, running slower ram could make a difference, or if both sets were 3600 or 4000 then Mebe there'd be no difference. Even brand/model can change things, 2x8Gb Value vrs 4x4Gb Dominators...

2x8Gb is quite easier to maintain stability, and shows lower temps than 4x4Gb at high OC /cpu clock speeds. It's an offset for the few games that might actually take some advantage of having 4 gates vrs 2

The description states both sets of RAM are 3200mhz CL16
