2xs HD 6950 ?

I was thinking about buying a Club3D HD 6950 2048MB and then save up a bit and buy another and use them both in crossfire or sli.

Is this a good price for one ? Also i have been told this card can run battlefield 3 on utra at my resolution which is 1280x1024

Would 1 of these cards be any good ? Also when i get 2 of them would there be a much of a boost with 2 of them together ?

And the big questions are these cards any good ?
I bought a 4850 a few weeks back 2 of them and both of them over heated.... so these hd gfx card seem to be bad with heat ... ( the ones ive had anyways )
 
1280x1024? Really?

I suggest you buy a monitor first.

One card would be a complete waste with that monitor, two would be ridiculously silly. 2GB of Vram would be silly too, so get the 1GB version.

I had a HD4850 and currently have a overclocked HD5850. Both ran/run very cool. This one never goes over 70c with 60% fan.
 
i am getting the cards first because i can get the monitors cheap. So while i have the money i wanna get a good card. I bought a geforce 9800 gx2 which can play my battlefield 3 at medium settings... at high it lags a bit.. at that resolution and the card is hitting 100c with the fan at 100% even with new paste so im getting a refund for it in the next few days so was trying to ask if a HD 6950 2048MB would be a good replacement. And why would the 2gb be a waste ??? With me i try and buy parts for the further so i could have a real good card with a rubbish monitor but then when i get a new monitor i know i can chuck one at it and it won't fail.... if you get me ?
 
More VRAM is really only useful for multi-display setups. Since you're only going to be running one, there's no reason to spend the extra on something that won't be used.

I agree with geekapproved - you need to be looking at a 1920x1080 monitor and one GPU rather than buying two GPUs and playing at 1280x1024. A single card will run your resolution very well, and buying a second would be a waste without a new display.
 
Like ive said i was thinking of buying a second card in the future. But thought id ask how good this card is.

So is this card any good ??? And in the "future" with a 1920x1080 monitor would 1 of these cards be any good ? And also would there be must of a boost if i added another one ?


I am looking for a card which i can add which i will never have to upgrade for at least a few years... Like i was gonna add one which ive said then get a 1920x1080 monitor then add another one.. Then hope not to upgrade for a few years.... But i wanted to know if this card would be able to play all the top games at the top specs on a 1920x1080 monitor and would 2 of these cards be able to....

 
1 6950 is perfectly fine(get the 2 G one for sure)Games like BF3 will use more than 1G of vram.
depending on the game,crossfire scales great on the 6950's,It is scaling as high as 90%.
I would definatly get a better monitor,on a 1920x1080 the 6950 is a great card.
I do run crossfire 6950's on 1920x1200,and have never had an issue.GL
 
Thanks i have a 32 inch tv which supports pc input and i can not get any aerial's in my area so do not ever use the tv so might start using it has a pc monitor. I have had a check and the 1g on is 100 uk pounds and the 2g one is 30 pound more ..... So in my eyes id rather pay the 30 pound more and get the extra g. But was also thinking if i had 2 1g ones in crossfire then id have 2gb in total but if i had 2xs 2g ones then id have 4gb in total. Would 4gb be fine tho or would that be to much ??? I know the computer does not look at it that way it looks at it at 2 x 2gb but in my eyes its 4gb ...


So everything is working fine for you with 2 of them ??? Would i ever need to upgrade them if i had 2 of them ? Like how long would i have with them in till they stopped playing the new games ? Because im guessing has days go by there will be better games out which the cards will have to keep with ...

I have a amd fx 8 core so all i need now is a good gfx card ...
 


Are the 4850 still running or did they die? Because I can help you with the overheating, my friend has one of these old 4850 with stock cooling (which sucked) and I own the 4870 which also used to run hot.

I'm running a 1920x1080 monitor and my 4870 plays nearly everything at medium+ settings. Since your card is over 2 times better it should run everything you throw at it at this res.

It seems a good price for the 6950.
 
Well i bought a 4850 from a cash trade in shop were people can put in there goods for cash and i put the card in and it over heated. It was the 4850 xs 2 version but think it was at 150c i put it into my computer and there was no display but waited 5 mins and then there was a display but it was pixelated ... So toke it back tot he shop then they gave me another one.... Which did the same.. so toke that back and they offered me another one but just got sick of keep going to the shop and selling me faulty goods so got my money back in the end. And was told that the memory was shot on the both cards be for i even bought it from them that is why everything was pixelated. So then i bought a nivdia geforce 9800 gx2. And now that is getting real hot. It was hitting 90c when i was just web browsing and 110c in games with gfx card fan at 100% i put new themeral paste on it and now its at 78c when web browsing and 100c in game... So sending it back on monday and getting a brand new 6950 and hoping for the best ...
 
I get tired of hearing "you only need 1gig of vram". True, at your low res it all may never be needed but better to have than not have at all. Off loading to the HD is one of the main reasons games lag. So is not having enough vram when you turn up AA not to mention other settings or running games in DX11 with tessellation.

I found that at 1600 and above res, the more demanding the game ( Crysis for ex.... DX10 ) 1gig wasn't enough........ all along most people would try to explain the crappy game play on poor coding.

I wouldn't waste my money on cross firing at that res but that would depend on your future monitor purchases and the rest of your hardware.

my philosophy.......... 1gig is the new 512. Useless! and it's tough to try and explain away how good a 1gig card is that can't display DX11. ( i think the 4850 is DX10 only ? )
 
Yes im with you there the 2gb one is only 30 pound more than the 1gb one which is cheap... And like i said if i buy the 1gb one and ever want to upgrade my monitor then ill be in hole .... But if i buy the 2gb one then if i do ever want to upgrade my monitor i can... adn 30 pound more for 1gb video card memory is cheap. And yes the 4850 was only a dx10. I have been told the dx11 is 100 times better than dx10 and im missing out on a lot...

So the final question would 2 HD 6950 2048MB be ok ? Or would that be to much video card memory ?
Because has ive said u above im gonna buy one then by a new monitor then buy another one...
But just wanted to make sure that 2 HD 6950 2048MB would be fine in crossfire ?? I have seen them on YouTube and said that adding a extra HD 6950 2048MB can give you a 100% increase on some games...
