Question 3.0 ATX and 5.0PCIe PSU or older ?

Need help with the new 3.0 ATX and 5.0 PCIe or older PSU. Im currently building a pc with RTX 3080 and Ryzen 5700x and plan to upgrade to a RTX 4080-4090 in 2-3 years and after that to the new 5-series. Also switch to AM5 in about 2-3 years or skip it completely.

So do I need a future proof PSU with the 3.0 ATX and 5.0 PCI-e so that I don't need a new psu when I eventually get a 4080 or 4090 and later the 5-series. I would like my psu to last the 5-10 years period.

Currently looking at non 3.0 ATX versions like: Asus ROG-STRIX-1000G or Corsair RM1000x, 80 PLUS Gold

And 3.0 versions like: be quiet! Pure Power 12 M or Corsair RM1000x, 80 PLUS Gold

pure power 12 M is not as good in terms of build quality as others you have listed .
if you want psu for future upgrades it is better to get atx 3.0 -
this way you don´t need a reduction to power new nvidia graphics cards .
for example phanteks AMP 2.0 is solid and doesn´t cost that much
MPG A1000G or thermaltake toughpower GF A3 are also solid options .
sligtly more expensive and even better would be asus strix aura .

Thanks for your reply. So basically im in a situation if I buy a 120-150$ PSU for my RTX 3080 (850W/1000W) or spend about a 100$ more for the 3.0 ATX for future builds and would pick a 1000W definately in that situation. Do you think 1000W 3.0ATX would be enough for 4 & 5 Series GPU:s ?

Currently looking at my stores stock selection, i'm looking at the following. The non 3.0 ATX is around 150-170$ and the 1000W 3.0 ATX are around 220-230$.

NON 3.0 ATX :
1. Asus ROG-STRIX-850G, 80 PLUS Gold
2.Asus ROG-STRIX-1000G, 80 Plus Gold

3.0 ATX:
1.Asus 1000W ROG STRIX Gold Aura Edition, ATX, 80 Plus Gold
2.Asus TUF Gaming 1000W ATX
3.MSI 1000W MPG A1000G
4.Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower GF3 - TT Premium Edition

yes 1 000 w atx 3.0 will be enough even for high end graphics cards
(unless nvidia goes completely crazy with 5xxx series graphics cards)

asus aura would be the best option out of all listed units .
