I've finally saved up enough money to build my very own PC ( $3,000 USD budget) but I need some help picking out the parts. I'm going to be mostly using this for gaming and video editing.

Here's what I have picked out so far or at least what I want:

Intel i7 6700K

GeForce GTX 980 Ti

NZXT S340 Mid Tower Case Razer Edition

Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz - If there are better options please let me know! All I need is 16GB of RAM

3 TB Hard Drive - Know any good ones?

I'm open for all suggestions! The list above is just something I threw together to give me an idea of what to work with. Also, I already have a copy of Windows 10 so please don't include that with part list.

Solution

Yeah but gaming won't benefit from the extra cores. Where it will benefit by going with X99 is that X99 has more PCI lanes for three or four way SLI, where Z170 is only limited to two way. Here is what I would suggest:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor ($351.98 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG A80 128.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($124.45 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock X99 OC Formula EATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard ($263.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX...
3k budget is very healthy

i would want a m2 drive or 2 for that budget--not cheap but think you could squeeze 2 x 512gb in just under budget--samsung 950 pro and a motherboard that gives the capability of running those at the full pci-e x4

and 32gb ram --for video editing the more ram the better really--ram is at a relatively low price at the moment

980ti is a great card--but pascal cards will be with us very shortly hopefully and does make it a bad time in my opinion to shell out for a 980ti

You probably would want a 5th gen. i7, but that's just my opinion. Anyway here's my build with it and without it:

Yeah I saw some article about the Pascal cards... Do you know when they are coming out and the price tag for it?

I'm considering a SLI 980 Ti build at the moment so I don't know how the new cards would fair against that.

believe they get shown of start of april with release around end of may start of june roughly

dont know how they will price them though--guess thats going to depend how well they do against series 9 cards

Do the extra cores make a difference?

Solution
In gaming the extra cores won't matter, but I figured both chips perform about the same in games, and as of now, the 5820k is a bit cheaper then the 6700k on Amazon. The extra 2 cores would come in handy in other scenarios the OP may encounter, such as video editing.

That's true, but one area where X99 benefits over Z170 is the extra PCI lanes. X99 can support 3 and 4 way SLI, where Z170 cannot. It may not make much of a difference in 1080 or 1440, but on 4K and VR? You bet it can.
